avocado?

excuse this dumb question, I never eat avocado and neither does DH.  I bought one yesterday to give to DS.  do I keep it in the fridge?  how do I know when it's ripe?  do I just cut it in half and spoon out the inside then mash it up?  I hope he like it b/c we are stuck in a 4 veggie rotation and that is all he'll eat!

Re: avocado?

  • That is what I did but DD did not like it one bit and she will eat anything!

    Good luck!

  • Don't put it in the fridge unless you need it to ripen faster. Leave it out and then spoon it out and mash it up.

  • That's pretty much what I did.  DD loves avacado.  If the skin is really dark, it's probably ripe.

  • It doesn't need to stay in the fridge, and it's ripe when it's a little soft/squishy to the touch (but not super squishy - then it's gone bad.)  You'll want to half it, pull out the pit, and then peel off the skin (that's how I do it anyway) and dice it into small pieces.  A trick I've learned is that if you have any unused, if you store it in the fridge with the pit in the same container, it will keep the rest of it from going brown (because avocado goes brown really quickly).

  • give it a gentle squeeze. if it's still pretty hard, not ripe. if it's squishy firm, that's about right.

store in open air, not fridge.

cut in half, spoon out inside and mash up.

DD loves it, as do we :)

  • I usually keep mine on my counter til I use it.  I use it when the skin gives a little when you press on it.  You don't want it too mushy though.  Then just scoop out the inside and serve!  I first gave it to dd when she was 6.5 months and she hated it, so I waited til she was 7.5-8 months and mixed it with some banana and she loved it.  Now she will eat the cut up chunks I give her,
