Question re: BFing in the hospital and your experience

I have a friend who gave birth yesterday and is in the hospital.  Same hospital where I delivered. She was high-risk and had a c-section a little before 37 weeks.  Her son was born healthy at 6lbs 10oz. She wants to BF, but her DS isn't latching. It has been 36 hours or so since her DS was born and he still hasn't eaten. Only pooped once. The nurses say to wait until tonight to see if he is hungry and that some babies just don't want to eat for a couple days.  She even told me that her DS was in the nursery overnight and got 7 hours uninterrupted sleep.

My DS, on the other hand, was brought to me every 2-3 hours for feeding and I was encouraged to try to feed him that often no matter what in the beginning to get my milk supply in and give him colostrum. Also to get us both used to it.

I am just wondering what other people experienced in the beginning because I have never heard of not even trying to feed in the first 36 hours? Especially overnight. One of my biggest complaints with the nursing staff at this hospital was the mixed messages they give.  I think this is a good example.

  • I was told by our LC that you want to try to get them to nurse in the first 24 hours, because the next 48 after that are the REALLY "sleepy period", and it's harder to get them to eat then.

  • I was able to BF DS less than an hour after birth and he latched right away - but he had a lazy latch and it hurt.  Honestly BFing didn't stop hurting until 6 weeks PP.

  • I was encouraged (with both boys) to offer the breast every 1 to 3 hours. My first wanted to nurse every hour so he was easy. My 2nd did NOT have any interest in waking up to eat. It was awful. I was told the same thing (that sometimes they don't want to eat) but he ended up being jaundiced. I was trying to nurse, syringe AND bottle feed him. But anyway, even with a 'lazy' baby I was encouraged to keep trying OFTEN! I did have one nurse that kept him for 4 hours in the nursery one night and that upset me though....
  • I had a c-section after 23 hours of labor. I fell asleep after he was born and COULDN'T keep my eyes open. It was maybe 3-6 hours until I nursed him? I don't really know. My milk didn't come in untill day 4-5, so he didn't have a lot to drink at the hospital. BUT he never was out of our site, and he was on my boob a lot. We didn't have a nursery.

  • DS was brought to me every 2-3 hours during the first couple of nights.  The pedi wanted to supplement with formula since DS was jandice.  My milk never fully came in and DS kept loosing weight so we just ended up FF.

  • If she's not BFing, she should at least be pumping.  DD wouldn't BF after she was born, but I pumped like crazy and still tried every 2-3 hours (through the night as well)
  • The LC's sucked at my hospital.  Told me DS wasn't latched probably so instead of correcting his latch and continuing to nurse him they made me pump every 2-3 hours and feed DS formula.

  • DD nursed within the first hour or so then did not nurse for another 7-8 hours. She was sleeping nearly the entire time. The nurse then had me try to feed her again and she latched with some assistance. After that, she nursed every 45 min-2 hours. They didn't need to encourage me to BF often; DD demanded that all on her own.
