Who has stoneware plates?

We have a set we got when we were married ... so 7 1/2 years old.  They're seriously falling apart!  They keep cracking.  Not from being dropped or anything, just a random crack will creep up sometimes even in the middle of a bowl.

Is this a normal lifespan for stoneware?  Or does my set just suck?  At this point, I think we're missing more pieces than we have pieces!

Re: Who has stoneware plates?

  • Are they CRACKING or CRAZING? Crazing is UNDER the glaze and doesn't effect use - frequently caused by dishwashers :(

But yeah, stonewear crazes, it's just the nature of the product. Cracking...that would be weird and I wouldn't expect it.

  • They're actually cracking.  One of the bowls basically split in half!

  • Yeah, that is weird. Stonewear can last for practically forever so that is definitley unusual. I've had mine since like 2001 and it looks like new.

  • I have a set from the early 1970s that we use every day.  The things are indestructible (trust me, I've tried).
  • So do you think maybe I just got a crap set?  Would you buy replacement pieces for this set or just start all over?

  • I'd start all over.  Why would you replace something that's already proven once that it will fall apart?
  • Hmm, not sure.

Where were they from? I might talk to the company/seller and ask if they will replace them or if this was a known problem. Personally, unless I really thought it was a fluke I probably would not get the same ones, but get something complimentary so I could mix/match them with my existing dishes.

That was the answer I was hoping for. :)

Part of me just feels guilty for buying new plates.  I have issues. lol

They're Sango.  They came in individual place settings not like the whole set in a box type deal.  They don't seem to be breaking in any sort of pattern ... you know, not like one of each piece or anything.  So it doesn't seem to be just a bad place setting, but maybe I got more than one bad place setting?

It just kills me that A) they're relatively new B) they're so pretty! and C) some pieces are still functional.  The complimentary pieces is a good idea, though.  At least that way I can still use my serving pieces and such.

Why do you think I keep *trying* to break my old ugly stoneware?  Just my luck I get a huge set that just.won't.break.

    sigh...

Freecycle your other plates and you'll be good to go.  :op

I think you should get new ones as well. I've actually tried breaking our stoneware and it hasn't worked, so if yours is breaking, then it's obviously the cosmos telling you that you need new plates :)

You should let me at 'em.  I've broken my MILs Correlle ... on accident!  I bet I could help. ;)

  • I have Lindt and Symeist stoneware and although it's had some crazing and will show metallic from silverware it is awesome! So indestructible and feels good in your hands!

I have a conference in PA next March.  Do you need me there sooner?  Is this an emergency? lol

I've waited 4.5 years, I can wait another few months.

Can you still make it look like an accident, or is that just a sometimes talent?

I'm quite accident prone!  I'm sure we can work something out.
