Poll: will you use a bassinet?

You can tell from my post below that we were just given a beautiful bassinet!  Before this, I hadn't really thought about it... but now I'm glad we'll have one.

I like the idea that the bassinet fits in the bedroom by us without pulling the whole crib into our room.  But it certainly isn't a necessity for a newborn.

Will you use a bassinet for the first few months?  (I believe it's for use 0-4 months or up to 20 pounds, whatever comes first)

Re: Poll: will you use a bassinet?

  • The plan with DD was to use the PNP but we broke down and bought a bassinet a few weeks before she was born.  I'm glad we did because the PNP was so big!  I plan on getting another bassinet for this LO as well.

  • I would like to.  I think it is better then having the baby sleep in the bed with you or having to go across the house to their room every two hours.
  • Yes.  It was so nice with DD to have one and we will have one this time too.  The kiddles will be sharing rooms for a while, so it will be nice to have then sleeping in different rooms at least for the first few months.  Mine had a light on it, so when DD made a noise, I could push a button and a very low light came on so I could see her and make sure she was okay.

  • I probably will because I forsee midnight feedings as being easier if I don't have to stumble down the hall.  But who knows.
  • We are going to use a pack and play that has a bassinet in it. And put that up in our room. The one we are looking at has a changer and a bassinet in it.

We might also use this sleeper at Target. It says it's for the bed, but i would never put my baby in the bed with us. I'd use it in pack and play or crib.
  • Yes.  We plan to use one.  I want to avoid the pack & play and just get a super light & convenient travel crib for when we travel & use the bassinet at home. I just hate pack & plays for some reason.

  • I think I like the bassinet idea.....my sister used a PNP but I know that can be quite large (as a pp mentioned).

  • I am hoping to get one.  It think it will *easier* with the baby close and will probably give me a little peace of mind as well.  The one you got is SO cute.  I only hope we get as lucky in finding one that nice.

  • We did with DS and we used it for 3 months and it was great for us as his bedroom was downstairs and we were upstairs.  We are planning on using the same bassinet this time for a few months while I heal from my c/s and so that DS isn't woken up too often by his younger sibling.
  • We had the crib in our room for the beginning with my son but have since moved and the room isn't set up to where that would be possible.

I'm going to try to talk my husband into a bassinet. I'm sure he'd love it because I know it will fit on my side of the bed as opposed to DS's crib that was on his side the first time around.

  • yes - it was really nice to have and she slept in it well. It is much more 'cozy' ?than the crib and portable so whether I slept in our bed or the nursery - she could be right there for those middle of the nite feedings.?
  • Yes I love the look of bassinets!
  • I really like moses baskets with stands.  I am going to probably register for one or ask DH for it for my b-day (2 mo before due date).  If we don't get one, I'll just use PNP in our room.

  • Havent decided yet. Our apartment is reallly pretty small, so I don't know if its worth saving myself walking the like, 9 feet between what wil be our room and what will be the baby's room. But on the other hand, I like the idea of the baby being the room with us, but I couldnt handle co-sleeping... so maybe. If we get one as a gift or something.

  • My dad is building a cradle for me. He is an amazing woodworker and I think it is really nice that he's going to give us such a special gift. Plus I have to go up a flight of stairs to get to the nursery, and I'm not looking forward to doing that! Having baby in the room will make things so much easier!
  • We used a bassinet for DS for 2 months and we plan to do the same with this baby.  I absolutely LOVED having him right next to me.

  • When I was pregnant with DS I had planned on putting him in his crib from day 1 and then we brought him home and I didn't want to be separated from him for a minute.  Thankfully, my SIL brought over a bassinet for us to use and it was by far my favorite baby item.  It's on wheels so I took him all over the house with me, the bathroom when I showered, the kitchen when I cooked.  It was the best!
  • Yes. DH is being transferred to British Columbia 2-3 months after the baby is born, so we'll use a bassinet in the meantime and set up a nursery after we move.
  • We are planning on using a bassinet for the first 2-3 months in our room.

  • Not unless we borrow one. I do not plan on purchasing one.
  • I have an extra bed in the baby's room that will stay there, so I could just sleep in that bed and have the baby close by. However, I think I still want a bassinet as well (mainly so that when my mom visits, she can stay in the spare bed and I can just have the baby with me in our bedroom without having to move the whole crib.)

  • We're going to go with either a Moses basket or a bassinet.  We're going to be moving 3 states away really soon after the baby is born, so we don't want to have to deal with a bunch of new furniture.  We'll buy all that stuff when we get into the new place.
  • I've started to look at them. They're so adorable, and I love the ones that rock. I can't imagine I would want to put my baby in a crib right away... too big and scary for a newborn who just came out. (Or maybe just too scary for me. I want her close, for sure.)

I'll still get the crib and all the nursery essentials though.

  • We didn't with Zachary because we were living in a 1br condo when he was born.  We just had his crib in our room.  Now we're living in a huge house and the baby's room is upstairs while ours is down, so we will use a bassinet this time.  We have a large sitting area in our room, so there's plenty of room for it.  I don't want to have to mess with stairs in the middle of the night when I'm sleep deprived!
  • We used the bassinet feature of the PNP and that worked really well with Dd. So unless I receive one as a gift that's what we'll do with this one. We also coslept with Dd for the first 3 months and it was wonderful. May do that again also. Then again I'm hopeful this one won't have colic like Dd.

  • Probably just the bassinet feature of the pnp.

She will definitely be in our room at night. It reduces the risk of SIDS and is just easier in general.

  • We are planning on using one!  They are so cute, my MIL has one and I know it's worked great for our nephew!
  • I think we will be getting a Co-Sleeper Bassinet at the advice of a couple mommy friends.  I hear that it is really nice to have baby right there and not even have to get out of bed to soothe them back to sleep.  This is the one I'm thinking of getting: https://www.armsreach.com/shop-3/the-original-1/tan-gingham-short-liner-21.html

  • We'll be using either a Moses basket with a rocking stand, the Arm's Reach Co-sleeper, a Snuggle Nest or a basinette. It might be that we end up with a combination of some/all of these.

  • No.  We didn't use one with DS either.  The baby will go in his/her crib in it's own room.  The baby's room is right across from our bedroom, so it isn't far to walk in the middle of the night for feedings.
  • Yes,

I will be using a bassinet that has been in my family since my oldest sister was born.  My mom used it for all her kids, and each of her children used it for their kids - and I am sure my oldest niece will use it when it's her "turn"!

  • Yes, and ours has been in the family many years as well. It was the bassinet that was used when my FIL was a baby.

I had no idea!  We're hopefully moving right after the baby is born, so we're planning on doing the same thing.

  • I've used the Arm's Reach mini co-sleeper for both of my children and will for my third as well.  It's great to have the baby right next to you and to be able to just reach over and touch them.  With most bassinets you have to reach down into them but with the co-sleep the side is actually even with the bed.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • Yes, I did with DS too- up until he was 3 or 4 wks old. It was very nice having him right there, but when I moved him to the crib he started sleeping MUCH better. With this baby, I will do the same, but maybe leave them in my room a little longer, since the two kids will have to share a room.
  • Definitely. We have an Arm's Reach Mini co-sleeper we used for DD. Both DH & I loved it, it was perfect.
  • Nope.

We will never have the baby sleep in our room...so no need really.

  • Yes we will be using one

  • I know bassinets have been replaced by PNPs but I had to have one and I loved it!   It took up much less space and was plain adorable. :)  Brooke slept in it for 6 weeks and would have stayed there for awhile but she had reflux and needed to sleep elevated in her swing.  I cannot wait to set it up for baby #2.
