Thoughts on bedding and bumper pads?
I'm going to be a first time mom and I am hearing all sorts of things about bumper pads, my mother in law says that I should not even use them and I should just pass on all crib bedding and go with flat sheets... I am so confused and obviously I don't want anything to happen to my baby. What is everyones thoughts and what are you doing??

There are mixed feelings about them. Personally, I don't think they are worth the risk. And from what I read, they don't really reduce injury by much (and the ones they do prevent are minor). So to me its not worth it.
BUT many disagree. Its definitely a grey area for sure.
Lots of controversy about this but yes there are many studies that have found a correlation between SIDS and bumpers ... but there have been many that have not ... again, controversial issue ... most sources that I've consulted (e.g., baby bargains say to skip them, etc.) ... I've just decided to skip the bumper ... don't want to take the risk ... bumper isn't all that serious to me ... the set that I purchased came with a bumper but I'm not using it ... it also came with a blanket ... which again, won't be using in the crib ... just the sheet and the bedskirt is what I'll be using from the set but it was on super sale so I purchased it anyway. Of course you could just purchase separates.
Many people use them and haven't found any problem ... I've just elected not to ...
I plan on using the bumper pads... at least for the first few months (since LO will be in our room at night anyways)- once he is moved into the crib for night sleeping, we may get breathable bumpers, I'm not sure.
All of our parents used bumpers and we're all fine....
My mom not only used a bumper with all of us, it was plastic coated, as I'm sure many were when we were all babies.
A friend of mine put her baby's bumper half way down the mattress. It still kept baby from bumping her head on the rails, but was tucked and very tight against the rails to reduce the risk of suffocation. I think this is what we'll end up doing with ours.
seriously, you cant use this as a valid argument for anything. There are many things our parents did that we no longer do.
There are also babies of that generation who died from it. Most didn't, but some did.
I used mine - I just made sure it wasn't super plush. DS was super roly poly and constantly banging his head against the crib rails (and we have an iron crib) pretty hard. And no - a breathable bumper does not offer any padding up against an iron crib. Once he started pulling up and able to climb on the bumper, we removed it and replaced it with a breathable bumper.
Thank you!!! Just because "it didn't hurt us" doesn't mean it didn't kill others. I hate it when people try to use that as an excuse to do something dangerous. Just remember that your dad used to smoke while pumping gas too. Apparently gas wasn't flammable 30 years ago??? NOPE, our dads just got lucky and didn't blow the service station up! Oh yeah and most of us were never put into a carseat or seat belt. It didn't hurt us, did it? Nope. So skip on buying the carseat for your new baby because you didn't use one and you're perfectly fine. Why waste the money?
Seriously, think about what you are saying people. Just because you survived doesn't make something safe.
I have a neighbor who asked me about her carseat installation for her infant, should it scoot around on the seat?? I said no, it shouldn't move at all, told her to get it checked out, and she said " Well I never had a car seat and I survived right?" And laughed...her daughter is about 6 months now, probably still scooting around in the backseat...cringe
