Anyone gone from supplementing to ebf?

Is there anyone here who has gone from supplementing due to low supply to ebf?  Did your supply actually increase enough to ebf?  I'm struggling with low supply, and am wondering if I will keep having to supplement with formula or if I will be able to work up to ebf.

And if you have had this experience - how long did it take???

Thanks! :)

  • all I can suggest is pump pump pump between feedings (right after is best) to work up your supply...good luck!

  • I'm in the process of attempting that right now.  It's hard.  I'm taking fenugreek, pumping, and supplementing through an SNS instead of a bottle to help stimulate more milk as well.  I'm working with a lactation consultant which is really helping and they monitor LO's weight to make sure she is still getting enough while I try to reduce the formula.

  • I did. I nursed around the clock, more or less. And pumped whenever I could. Oh, and I started taking Shatavari. It's an herb that's been used in India to increase milk production for a long time. It made a big difference with me! Good luck.
  • Yes! You can do it. Have the baby at your breast as much as possible (even if not really nursing), do a lot of skin to skin (even just wearing DS in a wrap or carrier with clothes still seems to help stimulate me), and pump as much as you can.

Drink lots of water & eat well.

  • I did in the beginning, and I used all the tricks for supply and about two weeks later we were goo to go.

I tried the SNS and the one my LC gave me (not the Medela kind) was sooooo frustrating, so I just kept pumping and gave her that in a bottle.

  • I supplemented for the first month and she now hasn't had formula in about 6 weeks.  I just made sure to pump whenever I gave her a bottle and my supply really improved.  I have to go back to supplementing now though (despite my adequate supply) because I have an excess lipase issue and my LO refuses my milk if it's been refrigerated.
