So it's no secret in my family that I really limit the plastic toys that A has access to. She has a lot of wooden toys and some bigger plastic things that I keep in the garage ie ride on toys, etc.
Recently a family friend sent her a huge ball popper in the mail. We took it out and let her play with it this weekend. The minute the loud music comes on she starts to freak out. Screaming, jumping and talking loud and is just generally excited. And then it doesn't stop. As long as she is engaged it's almost like it's over stimulating her and it's hard to get her to calm down enough for a snack, etc.
Even DH said something and I told him to put it up when she was distracted with something else. Anyone else experience this? Is it rude that I really want to donate it to Goodwill or something?
Re: XP: One more reason (for me) to limit the plastic toys....
I kind of hate that toy. It seemed to do the same w/J so we put it away for a long while. We pulled it out again when he was older and he did much better w/it and seemed to "get it" more. But I put it away again b/c the screaming noise was just too much for me plus I just got tired of having to hunt down the balls all the time. I may pull it out again for him to play w/a bit and then Goodwill it as well.
Oh, and we don't limit plastic toys but I try not to buy him all those battery-operated stuff. I prefer J and his imagination to provide the soundtrack!
Sabrina's PT had that toy. She used it once during a session. It irritated the crap out of me because the balls went shooting everywhere and I had to go get them!
She has quite a few music toys so I don't think the noise was an issue for her. DD seemed annoyed by it herself.
And it's not rude to get rid of toys that don't work for you or A. I find people have given DD toys that their kids liked a lot - and we all know all kids are different.
I think it is totally fine to donate the toys that don't work for your and your child. DS doesn't get riled up by toys as far as i can tell. But he has a limited number anyway and the loudest is the toy vacuum that he adores, which doesn't annoy me.
The biggest annoyance for me was the giant stuffed lion we got last year for Xmas. I totally intended to get rid of it but it's become one of C's favorites.
It has a permanent place in the living room now and is not exactly how I envisioned my LR decor.
