TTC After a Loss

Here's one for you....

Ok, so our lease is up at the end of this month (extended till the end of January) where we're currently living. Wish we could stay here but since my layoff, we really can't afford our apt anymore. So my dad is in the process of buying a three family house. He said the closing should be the 2nd week of December. Since my dad gave us first pick, we're torn between which apartment to take. The first floor is pretty spacious but it has one bedroom, kitchen needs to be renovated and complete access to the basement. The second floor is a bit smaller but has a renovated kitchen, one bedroom with a smaller room attached that we can probably convert into a nursery in the future (God willingly). And the only access to the basement is going outside through the deck and the down the stairs. The reason so for the basement is because thats where the washer and dryer are at. NO ACCESS through the inside!

So I look at the extra room for a future nursery (hopefully) and DH sees it as living room space is much bigger on the first floor than the second floor. DH also says that if I were pregnant, he doesn't want me going up and down the stairs through the outside just to go and do laundry. The third floor is more of a studio for just one person.

My dad said that once he sells his residing home and the one he's renting out, he'll eventually have money to extend onto the house he's purchasing. Once the basement gets done, he says thats where he wants to live with my mom and sister. Did I mention my dad will be retiring in 2 years; this is why he's purchasing this 3 family house. My mom and him will be traveling back and forth from South America when he retires. As for my sister, they know she'll be on her own in a few years.

So thats where we are; we don't know which apartment to take. What would you do if you were in my shoes??

  • I have to say, I agree with your DH about going for the first floor apt.  Going outside to get to the basement seems like a complete pita, especially if you're pregnant.  Plus, imagine when it is freezing  and icy outside.  Are you really going to want to get all bundled up just to go throw in a load of laundry?  Is the living area on the first floor large enough for you to put up one of those temporary walls and make a small nursery if need be?

This. Or, could you create a bedroom from a sofa bed? I know not very comfortable, but that could be possible -- creating a studio-like space in the living room?

  • I agree with PP. I would go with the larger living area and the access to the basement. I would hate having to go outside in the cold or rain just to do laundry. Not if I didn't have to.

  • i agree with all pps... 1st floor... the small nursery isn't enough to trump the inside access to the laundry for me... you can def do the false walls for the nursery...
  • I definitely agree with the other posters about the first floor apartment... good luck with your decision!
  • 1st floor with false wall for nursery will be good until you have your second or maybe third child.  Hopefully by then you will be able to afford to moveor some how convert the 1st and 2nd floor apartments into one (with you dad's permission of course!)
