I'm seriously thinking about switching to cloth diapers because we need to save some money. Thing is, I know NOTHING about them and wouldn't know where to even start. help!!
Honestly, I have no idea. I thought you could only buy them online. I seriously no nothing about them except that they save a lot of money! Pretty sad huh?

mylilgreenie.com has a great breakdown on the savings. Click on 3 reasons to CD.
You should look at greenmountiandiapers.com and look around. We use a combo of Bum Genius 3.0's, drybees fitteds w/thirsties covers, and snug-to-fits with thirsties covers.
I just switched over too. I am not sure if you are interested in prefolds (the old fashioned trifold type) or the convenient all in one diapers where you don't have to have any covers/dirty work, but here are some websites that helped me out:
www.greenmountaindiapers.com (this one has a ton of info about diapers and lots of pics to help you decide what would work for you!-I ordered my prefolds and wetbag off of here-very good service and products. Oh, and pretty quick, too)
www.jilliansdrawers.com (This website has a diaper trial where you would only end up paying $10 I think(?) and you can try out a bunch of types and brands of diapers. I was going to do this, but didn't go for it...just went with prefolds instead).
www.abbyslane.com (has free shipping and ships and delivers within about 3-4 days! Love this one! I've ordered all of my covers from here and a wetbag as well!)
These are the best sites I have come across so far! I've bookmarked them since I haven't read everything yet! I hope this isn't too much info and it helps you a bit! GL and send me a message on here if you would like some help! Also, if you use prefolds, I love the Snappi's! Those are used instead of pins and are so quick! Also, we got a couple of OneSize All In One Bum Genius for overnight and they work wonders-12 hrs and he's still dry! We've tried the Rumperooz (same style) and they were a little damp,b ut not bad. I love the Blueberry covers with snaps since my DS is lean with chubby legs and I can adjust to his needs! Also, I buy the one size for everything since I don't want to spend more money buying different sizes all the time! As for covers, I just bought a Thirsties (with Velcro) and I love this as well! GL (FWIW, DS hasn't had a rash at all with CDs)
There is a spectrum of choices - on the cheap end, you can just do it with prefolds and covers (you'll want about 2 dz prefolds for the size your baby is in and about 5 covers - you don't need to wash the cover every time) and a few "snappis" to fasten them (you'll need wetbags and stuff, but conceptually this is all you need to actually diaper). On the more expensive end, you can get pocket diapers that are usually one-size and you stuff them with absorbant inserts and can adjust them so they'll fit as the baby gets older - or you can get sized "all-in-ones" that you just put on the baby without any additional work (just fasten the velcro) but will need to get bigger ones as LO get bigger. And in between those two are "fitted diapers" which you velcro or snap and put a cover over (easier to fasten that pre-folds).
Most moms I know have some of each. We personally use prefolds during the day and pockets at night. Feel free to PM me with any questions!

I ask because for me, I learned the most by actually seeing the items in person and talking to the store owner, who had actually used them. I also learned a lot by lurking on the EFF board. I can give you a quick rundown:
1. If you want to save money, prefold diapers with covers are the cheapest option. They work well and are easy to care for, but take a little more practice to use. The diapers are only like $2 each and the covers are around 10-12 each. Thirsties brand covers worked well for me.
2. Now that DD is a little older and doesn't go through quite so many diapers, I am using exclusively "pocket" diapers (bumGenius and Fuzzi Bunz brands). These have a waterproof "shell" that you stuff with an absorbent insert. They are easy to use in that you put them on just like you would a disposable, except they close with velcro or snaps. These are pricy at about $18 each, but they are "one size" and can be adjusted for growth, so they should last until she is potty trained! So even though I have spent a few hundred on these diapers, I should not have to buy ANY diapers for a long long time (if ever). Plus you can use them for baby #2!
3. You will want to wash them every 2-3 days - obviously the more diapers you have, the longer you can go between washings. You need to use a "free and clear" type of detergent, and just a small amount of it. EBF poop washes out on its own. If LO is on solids or formula, you will either need to rinse off the diaper before putting it in the pail or they make these liners (I think Bummis is the brand) that you can just lay in the diaper and peel off & flush the poop away (this is what I plan to do when we start solids).
3. I wrote a blog post a while back about the pros of using cloth:

ohh thank you soooo much!!! Lots of help!!
How many will I need exactly?
I started with just two dozen of the yellow size (my guy is 15.9lbs
and he is just starting to max these out). I bought two of the next
size since I knew he would outgrow them soon. My mom thought this
wasn't enough and that I wouldn't want to do wash all the time (every
other day is fine for me,s ince I love laundry!! lol) and she ordered
me three more dozen! I personally think that's too much. Two dozen gets
me by and I still have extra! I do wash every couple of days for
diapers! I am now officially addicted to covers (lol), but I have 6
covers...3or so would be enough). I always pack one extra just incase
he dirties one. At nighttime, I have 4 pocket, one size diapers. I love
the bumgenius one (doesn't leak, absorbs very well, and fits him
perfect!) and decided to try a couple of other brands. I bought the 2
Rumperooz (as mentioned, they were a little damp in the morning, but
nothing to get his clothes real wet), and 1 blueberry....have yet to
try it out! These are my pocket diapers. I bought 4 of these because I
wanted at least two a night in case he woke up really wet or needed a
change in the middle of the night...hasn't happened yet. Then I
wouldn't have to wash the next day to have some for nighttime again! I
have heard people tell me that prefolds work ok at nighttime too and
that they use a "soaker". I have three of these that I used to put in
his pocket diaper with the other inserts, but it was bulky. It kept him
just as dry without one! But the soaker would go on top of the prefold
and the fleece on top of the soaker wisks away the wetness to keep the
baby dry! That's how these pocket diapers work!
So, about 2-3doz prefolds (depending how often you'd like to wash them....I wash every other day, even though it's a very small load!), 3-4 covers ( I really love my Blueberry brands), and if you wanted, maybe 4 pocket diapers!
(Just a note, I didn't go with the all in one diapers because I thought
it would just be nasty to clean and it didn't look as good of an idea
as I had thought when I saw it in a store by my house...I immediately
said no thanks...it just wasn't for me!)
The Jillians Drawers trial was extremely helpful. After using it I decided to use prefolds during the day and pocket diapers at night. I have 2 dozen prefolds (love the ones from greenmountaindiapers.com but hated the ones from jillians drawers) and I started off with sized covers but have since switched to blueberry covers (one-size) with snaps. (snaps will lastlonger than Velcro). I have I think 8 covers but definitely dont need that many. I generally use 1 cover each day but always take an extra with me in case she has a blow out. I would buy 5 or so covers to start. We have like 5 pocket diapers for bedtime (because you can adjust the absorbancy) and this is more than enough. Sometimes I use these when I am out of the house too. Getting one-size really helps to save mony and you can get any type of diaper in one-size (covers for prefolds, pocket diapers or all in ones). Oh and the reason we didn't do all in ones is because they are almost like pockets except that you cant adjust the absorbancy. It really isn't that much work to stuff a liner in the diaper quickly before you put it on LO. Good luck!
Trying for #2 since July 2010 BFP 8/1/10, missed m/c, D&C 9/15/10. BFP 1/8/11, chemical pregnancy. BFP 3/4/11, measured behind all along, no more HB 4/18/11. D&C 4/29/11. HCG didn't drop, Repeat D&C 6/17/11; confirmed molar pregnancy 6/23/11. Forced break, including two Hysteroscopies in October to remove retained tissue. BFP 12/29/11! Betas @ 10 dpo = 85, 14 dpo= 498, 22 dpo = 7242 Heard HB 1/24/12. 144 bpm!
I use a diaper service, so I'm not saving a ton of $. It is $12.70 per week for 40 diapers. Not cheap, but we are really doing it for the eco-value. The diapers I would use (Nature BabyCare, biodegradable) cost $12 a pack so we're on the same price value.
As for covers, I like Thirsties the best. And buy a few Snappis, they are definitely a necessity for prefolds.
I just wanted to add that we love CD. It is so easy to throw a load in the washing machine when we are low on dipes. No one has to run out. We have had one blowout and it was with a disposable (our washing machine was broken). I have so much more confidence in the CD than the DD.

They are made to change sizes as your baby grows, so they can be used throughout their diaper lives. We have 24 and I wash every other day or so.
A more wallet-friendly choice is using prefolds with Thirsties covers. Barrett started in these when he was a newborn:

We've been cloth diapering since LO was born - I thought this book was really helpful for the basics: https://www.amazon.com/Diaper-Changes-Complete-Diapering-Resource/dp/0965695573 but if you don't want to read a book, I lurked on the EFF board a lot and used this site for a general guidleline for getting a stash together: https://www.greenmountaindiapers.com/newmom.htm
