How often do you give your child dessert after dinner?

I'm having a debate with my husband and trying to see how often others give their children dessert at night.  I would love to see your responses![Poll]

  • I voted once in a while, because while DS will ask for dessert BEFORE dinner, he rarely asks for it after. Smile

  • My daughter will not finish her dinner, but yet ask for dessert.  Im hoping to break this...
  • I put every night...but that is not totally true.  It depends on if he eats a good dinner (by my standards...which is everytihng on his plate).  Now we have so much Halloween candy that I let him pick what he wants.  It will probably last for months and months.  We do not have dessert if we eat out (unless it happens to come with his dinner...and then I'll usually get applesauce).
  • My kids think that fruit is dessert.  If you offer it, my toddler will ask for his favourite fruit.

    Yoghurt is a big treat.

Cake, pie and the like are for special occasions.  My toddler thinks that birthdays=cake, and, they kind of do.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • Every now and then, usually my kids will just fill up on dinner and aren't hungry again for dessert but on the occassion that we made some sort of treat earlier in the day my DD makes sure she leaves room ;)
  • The girls get dessert if they eat a "good dinner" and ask for it.  I voted for a couple times a week b/c it's probably 2-3 times a week that they actually eat enough and ask for it.  They don't have to finish everything on their plates, but they have to try everything and eat all of what I know they usually will eat - enough healthy stuff to warrant it, I guess you'd say.
  • We don't really do dessert, so much as a "treat", not usually after dinner, usually more like a snack.
  • Everynight - but it's usually fruit.

If we have cake around, I usually offer it at snack rather than after a meal - more time to burn off that sugar high that way.

  • We eat healthy, but we all have a serious sweet tooth! For awhile, we were having something sweet after every dinner. Then the kids started asking for dessert after lunch and sometimes breakfast!  So, now we're trying to limit it a bit :)
  • If he eats a good dinner (which he usually does) then he gets dessert. We do not get dessert if we are eating out. His desserts consit of (Halloween candy, fruit popsicles, pudding pops or cookies). We do not give fruit as dessert since he gets that every day with his lunch anyway.
