Dried fruit is a no-no?

I'm reading that it's a choking hazard because it can gather in their throats.  Ds loves raisins, though.  What's the story on it?

Re: Dried fruit is a no-no?

  • I've never heard that. DS eats raisins daily, dried apples, bananas, blueberries, cherries, strawberries, cranberries. We have had no problems.

  • I have had people on here tell me that too but DD loves it and it is healthy.

  • DD does well with raisins.  I see how it could be a choking hazard, but if DC has teeth and is good w/ chewing then I'm sure it's fine.

  • I have never heard that.  DS loves dried apricots and if I tired to cut them out of his daily routine I think he'd freak.  Like pp said, they are healthy and I'd rather him that then some other things.  Just monitor them like all food is my opinion...maybe not a popular one, but that's mine.
  • we feed them to my son, however he doesn't shove a bunch of them into his mouth at a time.  He usually eats 1-2 each time, so I think that is less of a choking hazard but still something to watch.
  •   DS loves dried fruit.  I see it as no more of a choking hazard than fruit snacks.  He eats both well.  A piece or two at a time.
  • ds loves dried fruit.. i give it to him all the time!
  • Looks like I can give ds his raisins again!
  • I choked on absolutely nothing today. I was breathing, it tickled my throat and the next thing I know, I'm trying to Heimlich my lung out of my neck.

Joseph loves raisins and dried cherries and craisins. He'd kill a man for banana chip. I'm not planning on removing dried fruit from his life any time soon.
