Is it realistic to CD without a washing machine in the home?

I live in an apartment and go a laundromat to do my laundry. Would any of you CDers continue to do it if this was your situation?

I would like to CD, but not if it is going to make me live at the laundromat.

Re: Is it realistic to CD without a washing machine in the home?

  • I love my CDs, but no I wouldn't do this.

    1) Washing CDs takes 2-3 cycles, which would really become costly in a laundromat

    2) You'd have to either sit there while diapers were washing or stop back 3-4 times rather than just dropping to wash, switching to dryer and picking up

    3) I'd feel bad about the poo remnants others using the wash after you may have to deal with (totally different if I'm just wiping down the inside of my washer at home)

    4) I hate laundromats and would probably resent my CDs if I had to trek there 2-3 times a week.

  • I love CDs, but I wouldn't recommend them if you don't have your own WM, for the reasons the pp gave.  Also, I will tell you that every once in a while, we have a diaper that I have to wash *immediately.*  I wouldn't want to wait on that kind of diaper, nor would I want to have to rush out to the laundromat.
  • Maybe something like gdiapers would be a more viable option? They have disposable liners and you wont have to wash them every other day.
  • There are a few posters on EFF who CD without a washer.  I know iluvmadbiker is one of them.  You might try paging her, or just posting on EFF.

  • Thanks for all your replies. I wasn't planning on doing it for the previously mentioned reason, but now I won't even think twice about it. Maybe when we move in the summer!
  • I love CDing, but if I did not have my own washer and dryer I would not use them.

  • This is why we didn't use CD.  (Although we did have machines in our building... just down a few flights of stairs waaaaaaaay on the other side in the basement.  $3 a load.)

We did EC instead.  (With disposables sometimes and tiny panties the rest of the time.)

  • We live in an apt- we use a diaper service and love it. It is a teeny tiny bit more expensive than sposies but it's worth it IMO.

We had planned on doing this but 9 days before my due date we got a chance to move within the building to a bigger place with a w/d.

Now that I know how much work it is sometimes, I would say I wouldn't do it. I would if I had PFs only, but not anything fancy.

  • It's the reason I decided not to CD.

  • I'm sad to say that I wouldn't CD if I had to go to a laundromat. I like to wash my cloth way too often.

This. We use a small ecofriendly business that delivers for us. I would not go back to disposables ever!
  • I was in a similar situation when DD was first born and after doing lots of research, I opted not to. It didn't seem to make sense to me to budget time I could be spending with DD or working washing her diapers instead.

this is us - even though we have a washer - dh was happier to do it this way and it actually costs us exactly the same as sposies.  I <3 it!

  • We use cloth diapers and do not have a w/d.  We go to the laundromat twice a week and it really isn't difficult at all.  Would having a w/d be more convenient?  Absolutely, but we really don't have a choice.  There is no diaper service near us and using disposables was not an option we were comfortable with.  We've been doing this for about 5 weeks now and it's just part of our routine.
  • I would do it if I was using prefolds only.  I've washed them by hand even for two weeks on vacation and it certainly wasn't ideal by any means, but it was very doable.
