Common to m/c while TTC #2?

A coworker/friend thought the rate of m/c's would decrease after successful pregnancies.  A bunch of us are trying for #2.  One of the girls has had two m/c's already.  I feel so terrible for her, and it makes me nervous.

IIRC, my doctor said that there is the same chance for m/c each time you conceive, but I could be remembering wrong.

Any opinions?

  • The chance of m/c is the same for any pregnancy, whether it's your 1st or 5th.

  • Yeah they say that the chance decreases with every live birth, but I had a live birth and had a m/c with my second pregnancy.  Not saying that it will or wont' happen again, I just don't think it's something you can predict!
  • Honestly, from my studies m/c happen for different reasons. I have never heard it is more common to m/c when trying after a successful one.

My mom had 3 m/c before me and I was the first born. She had 2 more pregnancies after me and no m/c. I have had 2 successful full term pregnancies and no m/c at all. Hers were all due to the fact that she is O negative and all her pregnancies were O positive so the body rejected them.

And yes, I think the percentage to m/c is the same with any pregnancy. It can be higher depending on health issues, activities, etc but always the same within each person. Does that make sense?

  • I think that the actual chances of m/c are the same, but I also think that you might be more aware of a m/c with a second pregnancy.  I read a statistic that said a large number of women have had a m/c and don't know it (because it happens so early in the pregnancy they think it's just a late and heavy period).  I feel like with a second pregnancy you would know your body better and be more aware of the fact that you're pregnant earlier on (as opposed to a first pregnancy, where many women don't find out until 7-8 weeks).  I think that for similar reasons, women who chart etc. for their first pregnancy seem to have more m/c as well - they are just following more closely what's going on.

  • Hmm, okay.  Well hopefully I've already paid my dues to the god of chance.  I feel terrible for my friend though.  She got pregnant with LO #1 her first month of trying, and so she had planned out perfectly how everything was going to go with LO #2.  I think she is getting very discouraged.
  • I think it really depends on WHY you m/c. If you're older, the rate could go up since the m/c rate goes up as you age. But whatever the reason, the odds are ALWAYS better that you will have a healthy pregnancy than otherwise.
  • I always thought the chances were lower too but I know 4 women who miscarried after already having a baby :( Makes me petrified for the next pregnancy because my first pregnancy ended in m/c
