I'm trying to talk DH into taking some classes... (Kinda long)

The local CC has a one-year certification in web development.  He has a degree in Media Arts and Animation and is currently in an underpaid graphic designer position, which is the closest thing to his degree around here.  We have both been job-hunting for him all year with not much success.  SO many of the graphic designer-esque jobs around here also expect you to be a web designer/developer as well, and be fluent in a handful of web-programming languages that DH wasn't taught in college.  He knows the very basics of them but not much else.  It's very frustrating because it's clear that they want to hire one person to do the jobs of two different people.

Well, this certificate program is only 10 classes and takes 3 semesters, so he could be done in a year since they have a summer semester there.  In fact, he'd probably be able to get out of 1 or 2 of them since they're art-related classes and he already covered the material when he got his degree.  Most of them are available online so he wouldn't even have to travel to campus, even though it's right between his job and our apartment.  It would open up so many opportunities for him job-wise.

I know it's not what he really wants to do.  He wants to freelance/WAH, but we need to be in a better financial situation before we could do that anyway, and ultimately, it would just be another service he could offer as a freelancer.  He is going to look into the tuition assistance stuff his company offers and see what help they can offer, but if that's a bust, I think it would be worth it to take out a small student loan to cover the cost (since it's a CC it's about $3K for the whole program) because of the earning potential he'd gain when he's done.

Am I right?

  • He should really take the classes.  I dabble in web development and there is a huge demand for folks in that field.  Most of the web development positions include some graphic design by nature, so he'll still get to do some atsy stuff.  It will also make him much more attractive to companies as a consultant.

  • Definitely worth it at $3k, even if his work doesn't cover it!  I think any classes or program that will help further ones career are worth it.
