For those that want prostitution legalized...

How would you feel if your DD or DS participated in that garbage? I think it would become more likely if it were made legalized... just a thought.

Why would you assume that our children would be more likely to participate if it were to become legal?

I didn't participate in whatever earlier conversation took place.

There are thousands and thousands of professions out there - I don't think adding one more is going to make them anymore likely to gravitate towards that than becoming a nurse, teacher, doctor, shop owner, florist, etc.

  • Just because something is legal doesn?t mean that everyone will do it. Smoking is legal but everyone is not smoking. Also prostitution is not something people say ?wow I wish that was legal so I could do it.?
  • I'm curious as to how it would become more likely? What about all the children in Nevada?

I just think its on a case by case basis, have you ever watched the cat house series on HBO? Those women are confident and making a shiit ton of money! Of course there are going to be women who have a serious case of no self confidence, but you can find that in ANY career.

    Well said.

To the OP, I hope to raise a decent and respectful human being and see no issue with him consenting to a sexual act when he is ready. It will be none of my business if it involves money or not.

  • I just think it is a disgusting and degrading act, and I would be ashamed of this country if it were legalized.

There are a ton of professions that include the selling of one's body or image (modeling for one). There are some differences but in the end - it is selling of the body.

I think I wouldn't worry about prostitution or the legalization thereof, in particular if I had a daughter I would be more concerned with how the current media and society tell young women that their body is their most prized asset.

I think it's a mistake when parents choose to focus on individual topics (which professions are reprehensible and would break mommy's heart, the topics about sex before marriage, living together before marriage, yadda yadda). I think you should start with raising a well rounded, emotionally healthy and balanced child with whom you have instilled to the best of your ability good values, ethics and overall judgment.

As adults we all have to find our way - sometimes we make good decisions and sometimes we don't but having parents that we can always go back to for help and support is what remains consistent. If I took a disappointed or judgmental stance every time my son, in the future, makes a decision I think is wrong - I wouldn't be doing my job as a parent, once he is an adult, and continue to provide him unconditional love and support. IMO

This. And honestly, if it were legalized, it would be safer. Less risk of disease. They are going to do what they are going to do no matter what I think about it, and thus I plan to just make sure they know that I will love them no matter what they do. Something being illegal doesn;t really stop people from doing it, so why not make it legal and regulated to make it safer for the people who would do it either way...

I will love my kid(s) no matter what. They could be crack smoking, prostitute loving murderers, and even though I would be really upset at them for the choices they made to get there, I would still love them, because they are my child(ren).

    A mother's love is(or should be) unconditional.

Isn't it the longest known profession?

I don't have an issue with it.  It's two consenting adults trading money for a service.  It's like having your oil changed.  Some people do it themselves, some people have to pay people to get it done.

That's irrelevant. Abortion is legal and many people would say the same for that. Among a thousand other things this country does that this or that person doesn't agree with - war, drinking, smoking, etc.

In the end, like the PP said, you raise your family the best you can with the morals you hope will lead them down the "right" path in life and let others live their lives. Just because it's legal doesn't mean all of a sudden my son is going to be on street corners whoring himself out when if it wasn't, he'd be CEO of Merrill Lynch.

  • People don't usually up and say, "Hey, I want to be a hooker!" It's usually a job of desperation. I would hope my child felt they had more options than that. And if he ever uses a prostitute when he is an adult, while I'd worry he'd catch something, in the end he'd be an adult making an adult choice.

    LOL at the oil change.

  • All I wanted to know is how you would feel if you LO decided to go with the career of prostitution... if you can honestly say it wouldn't bother you then that's fine.  I believe it is disgusting, and I will be teaching my children that it is disgusting.  However, if my child chose that "career pathway" I would not love him/her any less.

I think there would be more people apt to try something if it were legal.  Not to say that everyone would do it since it is legal, but there are probably people that don't partake simply because it is an illegal act.  Take marijuana, plenty of people don't care that it is illegal, they just smoke it.  Plenty of people don't because it is illegal, but I bet there are more people that would do it if it were legal.  I would venture to say it would be the same for prostitution.  Again, I don't think everyone would do it, but would there be an increase?  Sure.  Or maybe just more awareness.

I doubt, if you asked a prostitute why s/he worked the streets, s/he would say it was to make themselves feel better. Like I said it's a job of desperation. They need to feed their families or addictions.

Perhaps you are thinking more of strippers? Though I wouldn't agree with your self worth comment in that case either.

  • I would not like my daughter to be a prostitute. That said, I'd rather a guy be up front about it and pay her and let them have a mutual agreement than to have a guy wine and dine her (ummm spend money on her, right?), get her drunk, and take advantage. At least with prostitution both parties are in agreement. And if it were a legal job, there would hopefully be protection required...
  • I am sorry to have made people mad.  It is just my opinion.

My husband and I have a very open relationship and he by no means had to tell me what he had done before we were together.  I have to say I respect him more for being a man and telling me.  Why have secrets?  Being in the Military and being over seas for extended periods of time cause you to do things you wouldnt necessarly do.  I know a lot of AMAZING men who have served and have done this.

So if they make it legal here what is the big harm.  This is all my opinion.  Feel free to flame away!

I think legalizing prostitution dirties sex. It's not something dirty, it's something between two people who love each other. At least it should be. It's not a commodity.

Jesus I'm not saying you should go take your kid to a hooker and tell them that's what they should be when they grow up. I think by teaching your kid that something is just disgusting and not to do it then they're going to be more curious. What  you're teaching your child is that prostitutes are "dirty" and they're going to in turn be judgey mcjudgersons and look down on them too. I'm just saying that you can not agree with it but please don't look down on someone for something THEY choose to do!

First, basil is ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE. Those eyes! That hair! lol What a cutie. And I love the way you dress her, btw.

Second, she didn't say she wouldn't love her LO, she just said she wouldn't want them paying for sex or being paid for it.

Your boy will date, won't he? I see no difference in taking a girl out to a fancy dinner and dropping a bunch of money in hopes that she will put out. Dating is prostitution, in a way, at least from the guy's perspective.

I'm all about being open and honest with your spouse about your life previous to marriage.

If he did it before you were married, then it's not so bad. Still a question or morality, but not as though he were being unfaithful.

But, if he's doing this while married to you, in a committed relationship, that's just wrong. Regardless of where he is, why he's there, and what his mentality is at the time. His thoughts should be on you. Not where he can get the quickest, cheapest lay... JMO.

I don't mean to flame, but if you were my friend IRL, I would seriously be concerned about YOU and how you are really handling this kind of infidelity.
