My LO has been spitting up like crazy for the past few days so I called the pedi and this is what they recommended:
Enough rice cereal in every bottle to make it the consistency of a "thin milkshake".
So DH went out to buy the goods and came home with a variable flow nipple and an Avent bottle. We tried this and LO sucked down 2+ oz in 45 seconds, then screamed for 20 minutes until he finally realized he was full.
Subsequent feedings have gone much better since just poking an extra hole in a regular nipple. Less spit up, longer sleeping.
So are any of you giving your LOs rice cereal? How has it worked out for you? TIA!
Re: 3 weeks old on rice cereal?!?!
We haven't had ANY problems. None. She is pooping great, seems happy as usual, and she is sleeping great because she's not spitting up in her sleep or after early morning feedings.
If your Dr suggested it, and they are ok with it, go for it.
I'm a total lurker, but my DS was in the NICU for a few weeks due to complications at birth and it was there - at 15 days old - that they put him on formula thickened w/ rice cereal (1 tablespoon per ounce, which is WAY more than I've seen other people post) as he was aspirating breastmilk and thickened breastmilk (found this out in a swallow study).
This was under the care of a speech pathologist and his NICU doctors, so I wouldn't worry about your LO's tummy digesting okay, if your pedi recommended it, you should be OK. My DS's bottles look like sludge they are so thick and he eats just fine (6 weeks old now).
