Success after IF

I laugh at prices on Craigslist.

I memorize prices and sale prices easily... (my degree was Merchandising Management) I got onto Craigslist and just laugh at some of the prices people are asking for things. I found the exact same Peg Pergo Aria Stroller (same color and everything) that I bought for $109 and this one is gently used for $100.

I also just saw a sit in spin for $10- clean and gently used. However- there is a Sit n Spin coupon out there right now for $10 off so you can get it at Target new for $10. Really people- just sell your stuff to get rid of it!

I guess if I were the one selling it might be different but I have trouble finding great deals on Craigslist normally. My best finds were a baby fence for $35 and an activity table for $10.

Do you have good luck??

  • We have a car seat base that we can't return (no receipt)--although I might try Walmart before I give up. I was thinking of listing it on CL.  NIB (box never opened), think store price is $42. How much would you ask for it?

  • I think people ask for higher prices because they anticipate offers lower than what they are asking.. so if they want $5 for that sit n spin they ask $10 fully knowing someone will come back with $5, and they'll take it.

Whereas if they asked $5 no doubt people woul offer only $2 or $3 to make sure they got the best deal :)

It's all silly.. but if they say $5 firm they're less likely to get any takers because people want to haggle.

  • You know what kind of luck I have. Starts off well and then the people just vanish!
  • My best finds: a jumperoo for $25...I resold it for $25 after I was done with it.

A bouncer I bought for $15 and resold for $20...I cleaned it up a little nicer than the other girl had it lol.

  • I've bought some large lots of baby toys for $15 or $20.  Now I can leave toys at my aunts house and also in my bedroom to entertain Jake when I am getting ready.  I love CL, it's calms my garage sale need during the winter, lol...

  • OMG I find AMAZING deals on CL in my area!  People frequently are selling things to just "get rid of them" so I have really walked away with some steals!  I tend to buy baby clothes from people who are selling them for 50 cents to $1.  I've never spent over $5 on toys for Patrick and I only buy ones that he uses ALL The time (like push toys).  I once bought NWT Shoo-Shoos (like Robeez) for $5 pair (and the used ones were only $1/pair.  These retail online for $20 (plus tax, S&H).  We got use out of the shoes (I gave a NWT pair as a gift to a friend for her son's birthday- another great way to save money) and now I have re- sold several pairs for more than I paid (washed the shoes up, shaped them and put them back into the nice packaging) and the people have been so happy!

I think it is very area specific though.  My SIL can't find good deals where she lives (her CL isn't as active either) and she used to look at my CL and have me buy her stuff in my area!  I love CL and am addicted!

Oh- I did this too!  I bought a large lot of infant toys for $15 (one of those toys alone I priced at $6 at Target and there were 23 of toys just like that one!).  The woman had just washed them and they were in brand new condition!  I scored that day too!

  • Craig's List is definitely interesting in that respect. Sometimes I think the prices are crazy, but we have found some good things. I think hannah&ben really hit on it though- you almost have to mark things up b/c people will offer less. This just happened to us this week with an item we were selling.

What gets really fun is the stuff on Freecycle sometimes and what people list that they "want" to receive! I laugh sometimes at how specific they get- do they think someone has an inventory of the item they want so they can get the exact color, size, etc??

  • I got a very gently used Laugh N Learn Home for $20 (normally $79).  Other than that, I haven't found any great deals.  Same as you -- most of the toys (used, missing some parts) are selling for just a little less than you can get them brand new for.

  • Here in Detroit it moves so quick that you can't really ask to buy it for less because the market is so large and you won't get it then. So people probably get what they are asking- it's great for them... but not so good when I'm looking for a deal!

  • I find the same thing.  I don't see any deals, but I guess I don't look hard enough maybe.
  • I have been lucky in finding some great deals, but there are definitely also people listing things for laughable prices.  You see those items listed week after week after week.  I sometimes feel like emailing the lister and telling them what that item is selling for more reasonably...  You never know though.  I love freecycle though.  But man, you have to act FAST there.

  • I got a HUGE pile of really nice clothes (almost all Tea Collection) for $65.  I thought it was a fantastic deal.  But that's the only thing I've bought.

I did sell a bunch of stuff a few weeks ago.  I listed everything for about half the price of new.  Maybe I was being too cheap?  I did make a profit on a diaper bag, though.  I'd gotten it used off Ebay for $80 and sold it on Craigslist for $100.  Score!

  • I have found some good deals and then some just okay deals. My most recent find was a toy that retails for 50 and I bought for 18. DS loves it! It is a dragon that pops out balls and makes music.
  • People charge really absurd prices for baby/kid stuff on CL. However, I got TWO matching Peg Perego highchairs for $75, which was a great deal. I also got my PP double stroller for $75, and it sells for $200'ish new.

In general, I find GREAT deals on CL on furniture and stuff like that. I always check for baby/kid stuff, but rarely find awesome deals.

  • I too laugh at the prices, even as a seller....I actually managed to sell a "gently used" Ikea desk and chair for the same price as it was listed for on their website. If people don't do their homework, or attempt to negotiate, that's their fault as buyers! I made some good money! Ha!

  • We got a high chair (never used, still in the box) for $45 that retailed for over $100...I thought that was a pretty good deal.
