Insert ?-Possibly a dumb one

Do you need inserts? When do you use them? If I need them how many should I get? Do I just lay them in my PFs?

Re: Insert ?-Possibly a dumb one

  • you don't need inserts with prefolds.  you typically use them with pocket diapers.

  • With my pfs, I use fleece liners that I made myself by cutting up some fleece, and I just lay them in the pfs. ?I don't use an absorbent insert.

why do you do this? How does it help? Sorry this might be a dumb question. I am assuming inserts are for extra absorbency, so it would be helpful if I use them at night with BG OS? Thanks for your help!

  • inserts are for extra absorbency, you can customize the insert type (fabric) and thickness for what works for your kid.

fleece is a stay-dry kind of fabric, so it will keep wetness off the bum and also act as a barrier to protect the diaper if you need to use diaper cream.  it doesn't add to the absorbency at all.

the insert that comes with the bumgenius are made of microfiber, so they're thin and very absorbent, but they also tend to hold onto odors as well.  microfiber cannot go against the skin, so it has to go inside the diaper.  I fold my prefolds in thirds and use them as my bumgenius inserts because of the stinky issue.

Oh thats good about using my nb PF. So I can fold those in thirds and use it in my BG OS if thats what I decide to get to use as night. That should work correct? Thank you again!!
  • yep, you might have to use 2 of them if one isn't enough absorbency for you.  if you have covers for your prefolds, you can also fold one in thirds and lay it inside the cover.  that way you don't have to pin anything.  it works for some people, not everyone likes to do it that way.  there is a little tiny pocket (like maybe 1 inch deep)  in the front of most covers you can tuck one end of an insert into to anchor it in place. i didn't notice it until someone on here mentioned it.
  • thank you! yeah I am thinking I will try te jelly roll but I think the folding into thirds if it works for us might be something that my DH would use since it would be eaiser for him. I will skip inserts for now and then jsut buy them if I find I need them later. I might buy some fleece from the fabric store and use it inside the PF just to keep the wetness away from the LO skin. Thank you again for all of your help!

Two reasons: 1) It creates a stay-dry layer to help DD stave off diaper rash, since the prefolds hold wetness next to the skin.  2) Less poop gets on the diaper itself, making it easier to get stains out.

But you're right, inserts are for extra absorbency.  I guess what I'm using would better be called a liner.  If you need more absorbency, you'd want to add another insert to your BG 3.0s.  You can use a folded prefold for this purpose.
