Hot Toys

So this is my first time really paying attention to what the hot toys are. When does the hot toy become hot? How do you know what it's going to be? I was just thinking of cabbage patch and tickle me elmos. Does anyone know what is going to be hot this year?

Last year everyone thought the Elmo Live doll, or something like that, was going to be the 'hot' toy of the year. I think it generally retailed around $60. Right after Thanksgiving I started noticing tons of listings on CL for this toy for $100. The posters claimed this to be the toy of the year! Impossible to find! Blah, blah, blah! But every store had so many of these things!!! By Christmas, I started noticing them in stores for about $35 on sale!

I read an article one year about how toy scalpers drive up the demand on the 'Hot' toys each year. They guess what they think is going to be hot, then go to the stores and buy them all up. Then, when there are not enough of the toy to go around, the news and everyone starts talking about having a hard time finding the toy. Suddenly everyone needs the toy that is hyped up as the toy of the year. Then suddenly, they start appearing on Ebay and other non-direct retailer for inflated prices.

side-note: I have received, second hand, about 6 Tickle-me Elmo dolls. They all looked brand new!

I got a tickle me elmo the year they were THE toy.. and yes.. I was 15 or 16 years old.. LOL.
