Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

My 16 month old isn't talking yet. Am I alone?

He kind of says Bye Bye, but that's it. Tons of baby babble. Lots of non verbal communication. All other developmental milestones have been reached (except he still uses a bottle because he doesn't understand to suck out of the sippy cup).

The Dr. tells me not to worry, but I am.

  • Even though I know it is no big deal I still worry to. DD says mama, dadda and ball. She has been saying those since before her first birthday and other than that it is just a bunch of babbling.

  • DS just started talking a lot recently, hes 20 months. He still jibber jabbers alot though.
  • My almost 22 month old isn't talking at all yet. I actually just filled out the EI form to get him evaluated. I wasn't really worried until recently because my doctor said it was common past 18 months to have little speech, but DS isn't making any forward progress with actual words, so I figured it was time.?

  • DD will be 16 months old next week. She doesn't say any words. Really I'm not worried. We talked to pedi about it just last week, and she doesn't seem concerned either. DD has met every other milestone on time, and she manages to communicate her needs and wants just fine. She knows a few signs, and she uses them, but it's only like 2 or 3. DH was a late talker, and so was I. IDK I'm just kind of going with the flow. I may consider an eval. at 18 months if she isn't making new sounds, but we'll see.

  • The only things DD says is mommy, daddy, bubby (our word for brother) puppy and whats that. She has said a few other things like one time, she babbles a LOT though. I get nervous about it but wont worry until the doc says its not norm.
  • My DS is just going to be 20 months. He EXPLODED with words right around 18 months and now seems to pick up multiple new words each day. I wouldn't worry about your DS just yet although I know it's hard not to worry. It will come soon enough.
  • My 16 month old boy has no words either. And I am worried.  Telling you not to would be a cop out -- most children have at least 3 words by now (mama, dada, and one other) and have about 10 by 18 months.
  • My DD started with a few words early but in the last 2 months (she's 18.5 months) her vocabulary has just expounded daily. Be patient. It's still early yet!
  • I feel the need to let you know that animal sounds count as words. So do any sounds they make consistantly that mean the same thing. Like DS used to say "gis" for drink and "va" for phone. The Dr. counted those as words too.

He's 22 months old next week and he's certainly not verbal, but I'm not worried at all. There has been a TON of progress just in the last month alone.

  • I've got a 17 monther+ and I'm in the same spot.  as long as they are very verbal and communicating I wouldn't worry abou it.  Bring it up again at your 18 but really don't worry.  If he's babbling it will come.  Also all my mom friends of boys that are older say the cliche is true.  On average boys just talk much later.
  • My 14 month old is the same but I'm not too worried because she seems to be imitating words and her baby babble is quite varied so I know the sounds are coming.  My friends have a daughter that is 2 and she does not talk much at all.  It's her personality more than anything.  Very laid back baby - wasn't walking until after 18 months.
