I posted this in 2nd tri...suggested I ask you ladies. So, I went in for UTI and it was confirmed, but Dr. also told me I had glucose and protein in my urine. He wanted to follow up with my OB because it may possibly be GD or maybe preeclampsia. Anybody else have protein and glucose and turned out just normal? Or should I be concerned? I've heard small amounts may be fine in pregnant women. What do you think?
Re: I have glucose and protien in urine...anyone else?
For the protein - there is technically no way they can diagnose pre-e before 20 weeks, so i doubt it's that. more likely you were either dehydrated, it was caused by the UTI, or you have an underlying condition. they'll have to have you do a 24 hour urine test to see what your actual numbers are.
i wouldn't be worried at all now. some people spill more protein than others, and pregnant women spill more than non-pregnant women.
good luck.
Actually, they can diagnose pre-e before 20 weeks, although it is very rare.
For the glucose, you don't spill glucose in your urine unless your sugars are over 300. Normal sugars after eating should be 140 or less. I would definitely ask your ob to do the glucose tolerance test early just be sure you are not diabetic.
I think this may depend on the doctor? My doctor (and a specialist) said that it's practically impossible to get it before 20 weeks - at that stage it's probably a pre-existing kidney condition and preexisting high bp, and, at least in her mind, it's bad medicine to diagnose before because you're probably missing something else.
i could be wrong though, just relaying what i've been told
Yes get tested for diabetes a.s.a.p. Not saying that to freak you out just that if you are showing glucose in your urine it could be diabetes.
Protien can be present through out pregnancy if you are diabetic so they will most likely run a 24 hour collection to find out.
Just do what the doctors say & you will be fine.
I had pre-e at 19 weeks, that is how I know it is possible to have it that early. I have no kidney condition and did not before or after have high bp. Like I said, it is very rare to get it that early, but it can and does happen. I was the only patient any of my MFM's have had with pre-e that early, so I don't really think it depends on the doc as much as how up to date the doc is with the current research.
