Flying with DC, need advice...

DD and I are flying in a few weeks and I did not get her a seat (praying that there are open seats when we get to the gate).  I'm bringing her Britax and thinking it would be easiest to get the gogo Kidz travelmate and can just push her through the airport in this rather than bringing a stroller too.

If I go this route, and there are no available seats for DD and need to gate check the carseat-what should I get to protect the carseat?  I've seen such a variety of bags for this purpose from $15-45, not sure what I really need.

Or if anyone has any other ideas?  We really only need to bring the carseat since my parents will be meeting us at airport with a stroller.

  • We have a bag that is a car seat protector - it has wheels on it and straps to carry it on your back. We usually bring it and a stroller - put DS in the stroller and carry the car seat as a backpack. If we need to gate check car seat last minute, it is already protected, and if we can bring it on the plane, we just put the cover in the overhead bin. We gate check the stroller at the last minute regardless. If you don't want to bring the stroller, you can get that wheely thing for the carseat and put the cover on your back, and then put it in the cover last minute at the gate if there are not extra seats. The reviews don't look good, but I've had no issues with it and I have a Britax Marathon.

  • I love the go go kidz thing.  We've used it a ton.

I'm travelling tomorrow with my DD but I'm not even bringing her seat, because we're going to visit my SIL and they have a 3rd carseat.  But we've definitely travelled with it in the past.

The bag we have is the nice heavy vinyl one from One Step Ahead.  I like that it's thicker than those red bags they have at BRU.  I didn't pay that much for my carseat to have it dinged, etc.  And I don't like having the fabric exposed like that.

The bag has straps and wheels.  We normally just check the stroller downstairs at check in, when we would check our bags, and use the car seat/go go kidz combo through the airport.  If there is no seat for her, we put the carseat in the bag and just carry on the go go kidz attachment (we have a Boulevard and it JUST fits in the bag...nothing else would fit) and put it in the overhead bin.

Tomorrow I'll just have the umbrella stroller, which I'll gate check.

The bag we have is a more expensive one, but I think it's worth it.
