Teacher who have gone back to work...

How was it when you went back to work?  When I had William, I had him in March and didn't go back the rest of that school year.  This time, I will be going back in January.  Was it really hard to get your class back in shape with your way of doing things?  My problem is, is I wasn't with them long to begin with.  I missed almost 2 weeks of school before I went on maternity leave between doctor's appointments, preterm labor issues, and being sick.  And, I have a student teacher that was doing a lot of the teaching anyway because I was out so much.  Well, I popped in today for their Halloween party to say Hi and show them the baby (they wanted to see the baby).  It was nice to go in and say hi, but it got me thinking.  I think it is really going to be hard to go back, especially since I wasn't there much at the beginning (My last day of work was Sept 25 - and with the days I missed, I was with them just a few weeks).  Tell me how it went when you went back to work please.  Thanks!

  • I'm not going back until Dec. but I am job-sharing so that other teacher is covering the days I was suppose to work.  I would imagine it'll be like your first day of school.  The kids will be on their best behavior before they go nutso on you.  I think it'll be fine.  You'll just have to treat it like it was Aug/Sept all over again.  Going over rules/expectations, being repetitive about routines, etc.  And hey, even if they're driving you nuts you'll only have 5 months with them instead of the usual 9!

  • I'm in the same boat except I didn't even start this year (didn't expect to go 2 weeks late!). Like you, with my first, it was the end of the year.

I totally panic everyday about how weird it will be to go back in January. My sub is trying to stick to how I run things, but she has modified things. Do I bother trying to get back to my way or just let that go. The kids are going to veiw me as the sub so that will be challenging as well. I teach 2nd grade so change is hard for them.

  • I teach high school, so it may be a little different for you.  I had a great long term sub, but she didn't do everything "my" way.  I'm having to reteach routines and how I want the classroom to run.  The only real problem is that my kids have had time to get to know each other and so I feel kind of left out.  I know that sounds silly, but they've been together for an entire quarter and I've only been with them for two weeks.  I think you will find that the anticipation of having to restructure will be more intimidating than the actual getting in there and doing it.  Good luck!
