Alabama Babies

Update on Aubrey

We have an appointment on November 13th at the Children's Hospital in B'ham to have a sweat test performed on Aubrey to determine if she has cystic fibrosis.  We know for a fact that she is a carrier of the gene, which means that either Wes, me, or both of us are carriers.  The doctor told me that 90% of the babies they see are ONLY carriers (which is really good news), and that she has a 25% chance of actually having cystic fibrosis.  We will know that day if she does have it.  This is going to be the longest two weeks of our lives I think.

Thanks for ya'll's T&P's.  I'm being positive about this and praying a ton.  I'll keep ya'll updated.

  • I've been lurking for a while, but I just wanted to let you know that I went through the same thing with my daughter.  She is 11 months old now.  Her CF newborn screen came back positive.  We did the sweat test at UAB Children's Hospital.  Everything came back ok.  The sweat test wasn't bad.  Our daughter cried the whole time, but only because she had to be still.  It doesn't hurt the babies, their arms just get a little warm.  My husband and I went through genetic testing to determine who was the carrier and to make sure that we both weren't carriers (for future family planning). My husband is a carrier and I'm not.  Her newborm screen also came back positive for CAH. We determined through bloodwork that she does not have CAH and that I'm a carrier of CAH and my husband's not.  It was a stressful first few months.  I understand what you're going through.
  • It looks like the odds are in her favor. :)  Continuing with the T&P and we're here if you need anything.  ((hugs))
    Siggy coming soon....
  • You're all in my prayers. I hope waiting the next two weeks aren't too bad for you...

Thank you for telling your story.  I am really glad your daughter is fine.  I'm glad to know the testing doesn't hurt them.  We are going to look into genetic testing now for the same reason of future children.

Thanks for all your encouraging words everyone.  This has really flipped my world upside down but I have faith that it will all work out.  Thanks for being there : )
