  • I would NOT start with a scarf- they seem like they never end! I started with a baby hat using a book- I have info about it in my blog a couple posts down! HTH!

  • I just learned to crochet this week!  All I can do so far is a granny square, but in three days I am about half-way done with a baby blanket.  The granny square seems like a good place to start.

I liked this website, because they offered both descriptions/illustrations as well as video, starting with the basics.

I also taught myself to knit via internet websites, but it's been so long, I don't remember what I used.

  • I didn't start with a "project," but rather made about five different swatches (20-ish stitches wide by about 2-ish inches tall), just to learn the stitches (knit and purl).  I made a scarf with JUST the knit stitch back and forth as my first project, but I didn't start on that until I was confident in proper stitch formation.

Most likely it was knittinghelp.com.  Excellent resource!

  • Make a baby hat! It's quick and easy. Scarves get boring, but they are good to start on. You are going to get hooked, seriously I can't stop knitting and buying yarn!!

  • I also made a baby hat as my first project. DH got me all the supplies last year for solstice and I went on youtube I think to see it being done (easier than the book I got) and voila! Definitely my suggestion is to get bulky yarn and bigger needles, that way you can finish at least one thing quickly lol
  • For those making baby hats, are you using circular needles and knitting in the round?  That looks intimidating to me, so I haven't tried it.  All of my projects so far are rectangular -- which pretty much limits me to scarves!

Any good sites for knitting a baby hat?
