How much to spend on 1st bday gift?

I'm going (alone--DS will be napping) to a first bday party tomorrow (yes, on Halloween) and need to buy a gift. Very last minute due to the snowstorm we've had this week--I'll probably be stopping on the way to the party. What is an appropriate dollar amount to spend? I usually tend to spend too much and get carried away. It's a skating teammate of mine's son, who I really don't know that well. I'm thinking books or blocks because I can't think of anything else. Does that sound about right?

We asked for no gifts for DS's party and only had a few people anyhow, so I really don't know what the norm is. TIA!?
