How far in advance do you carve your jack-o-lanterns?

I did one on Monday evening and today it's FULL of fuzzy black mold and there is a family of rather large snails living in it.  It's pretty disgusting.  I'm originally from Illinois and I swear we used to carve them at least a week before Halloween and after a long time they would start to get some spots on the inside.  This is the first year I've done one since living in Florida and apparently I'm going to have to do them the day before Halloween from now on.

  • I am in IL and we usually do it the week before too.  But it's usually cold and dreary so I guess it would keep them "fresh".  I bought one too early this year though and it grew mold before we could carve it, yuck.

  • We carve them 3 or 4 days before halloween
  • I used to live in FL and it is way to humid to be carving pumpkins a week early. You probably need to do them a day or two before - at least that is what we did when we lived there.

If you do carve it that early you have to leave it inside.

Ha.  If I had waited for my husband to be involved it would never happen.  He's not really a holiday tradition guy. Sad

I thought of this today, I should have brought it inside when I didn't have it lit.

  • Yep. I grew up in Baton Rouge and now live in Houston. Pumpkins were and still are always carved in the afternoon of October 31st.

  • A few years or so. You can see our collection of fakey fake jack-o-lanterns in my sig. I'm too lazy to deal with the real ones.
