I did one on Monday evening and today it's FULL of fuzzy black mold and there is a family of rather large snails living in it. It's pretty disgusting. I'm originally from Illinois and I swear we used to carve them at least a week before Halloween and after a long time they would start to get some spots on the inside. This is the first year I've done one since living in Florida and apparently I'm going to have to do them the day before Halloween from now on.

Re: How far in advance do you carve your jack-o-lanterns?
I used to live in FL and it is way to humid to be carving pumpkins a week early. You probably need to do them a day or two before - at least that is what we did when we lived there.
If you do carve it that early you have to leave it inside.
Ha. If I had waited for my husband to be involved it would never happen. He's not really a holiday tradition guy.
I thought of this today, I should have brought it inside when I didn't have it lit.
