Internal Ultrasound

I am scheduled for an internal ultrasound next week for dating purposes since I am not exactly sure when we are due.  I did not have one for my first pregnancy---anything I need to be aware of prior to the exam?  Does it hurt or is it just more uncomfortable?  Any help you could provide would be great.

Re: Internal Ultrasound

  • It's a little uncomfortable, but not bad at all. Some people do spot a little afterwards though, so just know that if you do, it's totally normal!

Honestly, as soon as you see that cute little baby on the screen, you forget what they're even doing to you! :)

  • It doesn't hurt and it's not really that uncomfortable.... maybe b/c your eyes are glued to the screen and you're not really thinking about it.  It's easy peasy, just enjoy seeing your little one =)

  • It doesn't hurt, but depending on the person performing the internal it could be uncomfortable. The trained techs are usually pretty gental with the wand thing, but my doctor yesterday in the office was a bit more harsh with it.

You honestly forget it is sort of a weird thing to have happening when you get to see the baby.

  • It really isn't that bad. I hate the annual pap/pelvic exams much more. It's so exciting to see a little bean in there that you don't really pay attention to what's going on down there.
  • A question I have around this-when I scheduled my first appointment I asked if it was an interesting appt in regards to whether my husband should come (it will be very difficult for him to be there so I'm just hoping he can make it to the big ultrasound). Well she was like, "no, just paper work, routine stuff and an internal." I assumed that meant exam- stuff some fingers up there, all good to go sort of thing. Does she really mean an internal u/s? That could be cool right? Did your hubbies go with you to this appointment? Or is it not as cool as I'm making it out to be?

  • It is a dildo looking thing...so if your husbands penis hurts or your dildo hurts then it will too....otherwise....nothing to worry about.

Oh, she means an internal exam.  At your first OB appt you get a pap.  You should call the office to have her clarify if you will be getting an u/s.  Some (maybe most) offices only do the 20w u/s.

  • Thanks mrs.jenni, that is how she made it sound. But then I started seeing "internal" floating around with early appointments all over the posts and got confused. I'm pretty sure its just the internal exam then, thanks!!

This. If you're not getting an early u/s it's up to you if you want your DH to come. If he does I would prep him for what an internal is.

  • I agree with the others.  Its not uncomfortable, although I have heard of some who have spotted afterwards which is normal.  And like they said your eyes will be glued to the seen to see your little baby

  • The doctor who did mine put a condom on top of the wand, then put the lube... he grabbed it from the basket in the wating room, and when he grabbed it I said "Uhh doc, its a little late for that" =D

My doc used a condom too! A red one, at that.

  • DH went with me to mine at 7 weeks.  I did tell him what it was going to be like, but when the tech handed ME the dildo shaped wand and told me to put it in we both got a little freaked out!  Poor thing, I also had a regular internal exam that he had to sit through.  He never said a word, but the look on his face was priceless.
