Consumer Reports: 5 Items Not to Buy for Baby

This popped up in a couple of my blogs today...

Consumer Reports: 5 items not to buy for baby:

1) Bedside and other co-sleeping devices

2) Baby bath seats

3) Sleep positioners

4) Crib bumper pads

5) Sling carriers

Interesting.... Thoughts?

Re: Consumer Reports: 5 Items Not to Buy for Baby

  • I've always thought CR was a little "off" in their recommendations, especially with baby stuff. Like, for the co-sleeper - what is their basis for that? Same with slings.

I almost feel like sometimes CR is intentionally anti-AP.

And I disagreed with their dishwasher reviews once, so that irked me. :)

  • Oh, I just clicked the link. I've seen that piece before. The co-sleeper rec is ridiculous.

One popular Simplicity bedside sleeper/bassinet was recalled after two babies died from strangling or suffocating when they slipped through an opening in the frame.

Um yeah. LOOK at it. It was RECALLED. Plus, they never say to not buy a crib even though babies have died in cribs before.

  • After reading the article the problems seems to be more with user error than the actual products.  And I'm not trying to be heartless but with every product in the world I'm sure there could be 6-30 deaths, especially if it wasn't used properly.  Seems like a little bit of hype to me and just something else to make new parent's frozen with being paranoid.

    I know, right? I completely agree - it's decidedly anti-AP.

I've looked at CR with the stink eye ever since they said that the Dyson was a lot of hype, but not a great vacuum cleaner. Whuuuuut?

Without reading the article, my guess is they don't recommend those types of bedside sleepers because their designs are not regulated.

This doesn't mean that some of them aren't safe, but, maybe they consider it an elevated risk due to lack of regulation.

    Just a guess.

Yuppers. Just like any other product.

Spurious relationships, yo. Like, don't buy a used car because you're more likely to get in an accident. OR, is it that teens are more likely to buy/have used cars, and teens are more likely to get in accidents?

  • okay I'm looking at it and I LOL about the sling carries...do they also not recommend you carry your baby on your hip? Because you might drop them.

As a general rule, I hate CR. I think their problem is

    a) they are political and

    b) they rate their products using criteria that do not necessarily align with what I see as important (or more important)

I remember they recommend this cheap vaccum over the Dyson.  When I went to Sears to buy a vaccum, the salesman laughed and said they weren't even in the same class or product and it made no sense to compare the two.

  • Yeah. That's a crock. Just like most other things that CR reports on, factor in some common sense and critical thinking abilities and you'll likely make better decisions than they do. Not to say CR doesn't sometimes come in handy but c'mon.

I agree that this list seems anti-AP. That makes me sad. It already gets  a bad rep because people are incapable of separating the drugged out parents that fall asleep with their baby on their chest resulting in the death of the child from the careful parents who bed-share properly. ::sigh::

The one that comes to mind for me is that there are more drowning deaths in July due to more ice cream being eaten. Silly.
