Question about "O" and Cycle Length

Okay, so I was once one of those "newbies" that thought I had "clockwork" cycles....I am now educated enough to know that is not the case, read TCOYF, and am charting (with the exception of my lovely week long influenza infestation at my house). Anywho, on to the question.

I "normally" ovulate around CD 14/15, but I think due to the flu, my ovulation has been delayed. I have had 2 positive OPK's one yesterday and today, and "O" pains, I am hopeful that I will ovulate today/tomorrow. My question is, if I ovulate this late in my cycle and my cycles are normally around 28 days, will my luteal phase be long enough for implantation? I appreciate the help, as this is only my second cycle charting and I'm a little confused with all of this, especially the delayed ovulation... again I once thought I was a "clockwork" girl...shudder... I know!

Thanks so much!!

Re: Question about "O" and Cycle Length

  • The time between AF and O can vary, usually your LP stays the same.  So you may not O til CD 20, but if you normal LP is 12 days, then it should stay the same. GL!  I hope you are feeling better.

  • Your luteal phase is usually the same length (or very close to it).  You will probably just have a longer cycle this month.

  • How long was your Luteal phase last month when you charted?  Around 14 I assume.  If your O was delayed by two days then AF should be about two days later if you do not get KTFU.  But because of the flu and that you never know when your cycle will decide to go wonky it could be a short LP or longer than 2 days "later" than normal and still get BFN.

  • Your LP usually stays pretty constant (give or take a day or two), so late O doesn't mean a shorter LP, it means a longer cycle.  GL!

  • Generally, your LP doesn't change.  It is possible, but generally it stays the same.  Looks like last cycle you had a 10 day LP, so if you ovulate on CD18, you should get AF 10 days later.  If you O later, you'd still get AF 10 days after O, and therefore have a longer cycle that time.  Does that answer your question?

A 10 day LP is a tad on the short side, but not horrible.  You might want to speak with your Dr. about adding B6 to try and lengthen your LP by a few days.  But B6 can be toxic, so don't just add it on your own.

  • Thanks girls, I appreciate it! Wink It makes sense, and that was what I was thinking, just never had a delayed "O" that I know of! You all are the best!
  • It's only your second month of charting, so I can only base my guess on your LP from last cycle, which was 11 days.

Whenever you O this month, plan for about an 11 day LP to follow (based only on the info from last cycle)--which will probably make your cycle longer than your usual 28 days.  As you probably read in TCOYF, your LP length should be about the same from cycle to cycle (give or take a day)- but (the disclaimer) everyone is different.

Last cycle was my first off BC, so it was all a little "wonky" I was only on for a couple months, before that we used barrier methods and my cycles were about 28 days on average. I'm thinking I normally have a longer luteal phase, but never charted before to be sure. I have an appt. with the OB/GYN in December, hopefully I'll have had enough cycles to see if the LP is an issue, and will for sure bring it up! Thanks for the tip!
