2nd Trimester

Anyone else have a baby with only one kidney?

Well, I had to return my urine sample for the 24 test and found out I passed my 1 hour glucose test. Yea!

Then onto our follow up u/s to check his heart again. Last month he would not let them see the left side of his body. His heart looks great, 4 chambers, good blood flow, good rate. This time we were able to confirm that he only has one kidney. Last month they couldn't see the right one but we were hoping it was because he wouldn't show his left side. I'm kinda freaking out as we have been through the ringer with these u/s people. This is the first issue that really is an issue. His one kidney was slightly larger than normal but that is common in babies/people who oly have one. He is in lots of fluid so we know the kidney is working. Anyone else have a baby with only one kidney?

Any advice would be much appreciated. Help me breathe again!

Re: Anyone else have a baby with only one kidney?

  • I don't know anyone with a baby, but my uncle (who is 56) just recently found out that he only has one kidney.  He didn't know his whole life, well til now, and never had any issues because of it.

  • You do realize people give up a kidney in operations all the time?  I wouldn't worry until it truly becomes a problem.
  • I know people can live with one kidney but it still is tough to hear that your baby is not 100%.
  • We'll be finding out next week. For my U/S baby's kidneys looked larger than norm, and the doc said that it could mean that the baby will lose one of his kidneys. We're not too worried about it b/c the doc told us that a lot of people live normal lives with only 1, and this is what I have read online.
  • I accidently clicked on the 2nd Tri instead of 3rd Tri board and your post caught my eye.

My baby has both kidneys...but I was born with one kidney that does 80% of the work and a very small kidney that does 20% of the work...and I'm just fine. I had to see a Pediatric Urologist/Nephrologist as a child....but I've been a normal functioning person ever since.

People can live entire normal lives with only 1 kidney - their entire lives.  As long as the one kidney functions fine your baby should be fine.  Hydration is always going to be important to keep the one kidney functioning well and without infection.

     Good luck!

  • I have not had one, but DH is kind of one. When he was born his was smaller and giving him trouble, they later found out it was a type of cancer called Wilms Tumor. We have checked and it's not a herreditory thing, but something he just was born with. He spent a few months in the hospital making sure everything was okay and to prepare for sugery. They were able to remove the kidney by the time he was only a few months old.

I know this is not the exact same situation, but he is now 28 and very healthy. He has lived with only one kidney since he was a few months old. They requested that he avoided major contact sports and it gave his mother a good excuse to scare him into not drink when he got older. He was still very active in other things and is about to have his first son. One of his biggest fears was to see this in his son. So far, we have everthing accounted for.

I hope this helped a bit and good luck. I know his parents only were worried in the beginning and then kind of relaxed as he got older.

  • Thank you everyone!

Mrs. S- I really appreciate your input! I'm grateful you clicked on the wrong tri! See you in 3rd tri in a few days! :)

  • My husband only has one kidney and it was only discovered when he had a scan for an injury in high school.  I'm not sure if it's genetic, but that's one of the big things I am wondering about going into our anatomy scan in a few weeks.  It never been an issue for him, he was just told not to play football or other contact sports.
It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!
