why are people obsessed with strollers???

Anyone else have friends/family constantly trying to convince you to put your LO in a stroller instead of wearing them?  We went to a Renaissance Festival yesterday and I brought 3 (yes, 3!) babywearing devices.  DS started out in the mei tai on my back, moved to the K'Tan for nursing and a nap and ended the day in the ring sling.  But my FIL kept offering that maybe he'd like to be in the stroller (which we lugged around to keep all my carriers in - ha!).  My mom did the same at an antique festival.  And my neighbor, who sees me walking with DS all the time, said "we need to get you a stroller!  I saw one at a garage sale down the road..." like I wanted a stroller but couldn't afford one.  It's like he thought I'd rigged up my carriers as a last resort.

What is the obsession with strollers?  Is it so hard to believe that I really like (love!) wearing my baby?

Re: why are people obsessed with strollers???

  • Oh yes, when I first got my wrap, my mom pleaded with me to just put Mila in the stroller. They were here visiting then so luckily I don't have to hear it all the time : )

  • Ooooh yes. I'd say that other than the "extended" breastfeeding (he's 8 months!), that's the #1 complaint I get from family.

My grandmother actually bought me a stroller, unasked for, since I was "too cheap to go out and buy one, even though it's best for your son!" We never use it, and we don't use the two we already had.

  • Everyone always tells me I should put D in a stroller too. Funny thing is, the few times that I have, within minutes he was crying and wanted to be held. He hates it - he'd much rather be in a baby carrier.
  • Even though DH wears DD all the time at home, he still questions why we dont just get a stroller for when we go out.

Why buy a stroller when I have this big ole' body stroller? I am far more efficient then a piece of equipment.

  • Because they want to push the baby around and the thought of carrying them with their bad backs seems too painful:)

  • I'm guessing b/c you're obsessed w/ carriers?  :-)

  • I get comments like this all the time from people who feel its their god-given right to be in the face of all babies, all the time. It's VERY annoying. People get irritated because they want to see the baby, crouch down, touch him/her, give him/her the swine flu...........

People are always like "Oh, he's in there so well I can't even peek."

Yes, because my purpose in life is to have a bunch of strangers in my baby's face all day Hmm

  • Well, I love my carriers, but I love my strollers too :)

  • i'm more than thrilled with the fact we've made it to 13 months with just one stroller.  i'd rather have ten carriers and one stroller than four or five strollers like some people told me i'd need
  • I wonder this, too. In the city I would go crazy trying to navigate a stroller around people, tiny aisles of stores, etc. Wearing her is so much easier. And it's good exercise for me... I need it! I can't tell you how many times I've seen a parent carrying the baby and pushing an empty stroller around. Kind of funny :)

  • Because people think strollers are so much easier to lug around.  My mom tells me I look like a pack mule carrying DS in the Ergo and that it's very unattractive and no wonder other moms don't want to talk/hang out with me.  It's less weight in the car to carry the Ergo than the umbrella stroller even. :-P
  • I actually wonder why lots of mamas here deal with lugging a stroller up and down subway steps rather than just wearing their babies. But I never say anything to them about it. It's rude to openly criticize how someone wants to transport their child, no matter your personal opinion on the matter.

  • We have a stroller, actually a simple snap-and-go for our carseat (oh, the horror! ;) and we do use if the situation warrants. But DH always thinks the stroller is the easier option-I think because it's a contraption with wheels-and I have to point out to him that sometimes wearing DS is actually the better choice.

We went out for a walk with MIL a little while ago, and she stared at me like I had two heads while I put my wrap on. Then she made a comment about how "handy" it was in a tone that was clearly not complimentary. To top it off, on the way home she made a dig at how I was "controlling" the baby.

I'm still not really sure how one can be controlling of their own infant, but I'm guessing it was because I wore him as opposed to putting him in a stroller that she would get to push around or at least stare at for the entire walk.

    Four or five strollers? Ugh.

We have a Bob Revolution that we love. We don't use it a whole lot because DS prefers to be worn, especially when we're shopping. If we on a walk or out in the park he seems to have a slight preference towards the stroller, but I think it's because it's so hot here in the summer. We'll see if he still prefers it once it's colder.

  • I would actually like to use my stroller. Somebody give Em the memo for me, ok? b/c she disagrees!

    Gee, thanks mom! Surprise

I think maybe people who have never worn their babies think it looks more laborious than pushing a stroller, so they think they're doing you a favor by recommending the stroller. Or maybe they've had bad experiences with bad carriers and think you're experiencing the same problems. Or maybe they just think you're "hogging" the baby by keeping him or her so close.

  • Thankfully, after months of explaining to DH, he's finally agreed that it will be easier to wear baby in stores and stuff instead of getting a stroller. He even said we probably won't need one for a year and a half and then we'll just get a lightweight umbrella one! :)

I'm sure we'll get comments on it, but unless my baby HATES being worn, I don't plan on getting a regular stroller. (We'll probably get a jogging stroller for walks/ runs but not until baby is a little older.)

LOL.  I'll have to keep your response in mind, I get that ALL THE TIME and have nothing good to say.  I normally mumble something like, yeah he's super content and happy or everyone loves a quiet baby.

  • I love my stoller.

But I know I would dislike it if someone tried to push babywearing on me not knowing my circumstances (baby disliking being worn) so I can share your frustration with other people judging you for something so stupid, and for trying to tell you how to parent your child.

Question - if you wanted to do a big shopping trip (let's say, for Christmas) and brought baby with you, what do you do with your bags?  In that case, the stroller comes in handy...

...wear the baby, put bags in stroller :P

  • The stroller is pretty much the only way my son will nap.  He does not nap when he's being worn, and he only tolerates being worn for a short while anyway.  So we do use the stroller a lot, although I insisted that we buy one with a reversible seat so that he can face us.  Honestly, I don't get what the big deal is either way.  Wear your baby, put him in a stroller - it does not matter to me.
