are the lights on or off? if off, maybe put a night light on, or how about if you get a pop up book to read. and open it right away to catch his attention. my dd loves pop up books - she is 10 months
I would try nursing in a different location before bedtime if you haven't already. My dd went through the screaming when I went near the bed for a couple weeks. I'm not sure if anything we did helped but I ended up just waiting her out. I would keep the lights low and try not to really play with her and eventually she would get tired enough to go to sleep.
