can you decline a pap at first midwife appt?

or are they going to give me a hard time about it?  i don't want to have to deal with freaking out over spotting/bleeding etc and i know that i'm due for a pap but honestly - even if it's abnormal they can't do anything while you're pregnant anyway right?  i've only had one abnormal pap ever and that was maybe 4 or 5 years ago.. normal since then.  thoughts?

    Agreed.  I didn't bleed or spot at all after mine so it's not a given that you will.

    I also agree.  Better safe than sorry.  And if you do spot after it, it should be terribly minimal, very different from scary PG spotting.

    They're going to give you a hard time.  I've never been able to decline a pap and mine have all been normal.  Just ask for the smallest speculum and try to relax the rest of the day if you can.  And let them know you're concerned about spotting/bleeding afterwards.

    As the daughter of a cervical cancer survivor - get the pap.  I wouldn't be here if it weren't for early detection.

    My midwife was very gentle, didn't even open the speculum all the way. Maybe voice your concerns ahead of time, and they will try to be extra gentle so as not to cause any undue bruising.

    I declined mine because I had an early miscarriage with my first pregnancy and I didn't want any poking around down there in the first trimester - my midwives understood my concerns, respected my wishes, and did not give me a hard time.

    I didn't have to do mine but I'd had my annual done literally a month before - I think it was actually the day after we conceived (opps, not meant to get a pap within 24 hours of having sex but I always forget!. But that was the only reason why.

    If you don't want the pap, you can decline it. You can decline any medical procedure. I don't know if the office will give you a hard time about it or not. It's possible they will. My midwife said she would rather I not get one while pregnant because it increases the risk of infection and because of the spotting. She does one at the 6 week appointment after birth.

    this.  I'm not sure if I would have a different opinion if I had a previous abnormal pap, but I never have.   The first MW I saw said the exact same thing.  The new place I have to go (nurse  MW practice)  seems to be very bothered that I am now due for one and haven't had it done.  Not sure what I will do at my appt. next week.
