Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

16 months and bottles?

DD is almost 16 months. We have no plan to get rid of bottles. We tried once over the summer when I was off from work. It didn't work. She was annoyed and refused to drink her milk. She will drink any other beverage from her sippy.

My question...any other LO's this age on all bottles for milk? Do you have plans to drop the bottles or just going with the flow? Is there a reason that I MUST switch to all sippies?

  • DS still gets a bottle before bed. I'm not bothered.

  • We're still working on it. He drinks 2 sippies and 3 bottles a day. I'm slowly moving him to sippies but bottles are a comfort for him, so I'm not obsessing about it.

They say the reason to switch is bottles are bad for their teeth. Luckily my DS barely has any teeth, so I still have some time, I figure:)

  • No reason to rush except for the PIA of cleaning bottles.  DS has been off a "bottle" since 6 months because one day he decided he didnt like the nipple anymore and refused to drink unless I used the training sippy nozzle.  So then it was easier to switch to sippy.....now he is obsessed with only drinking from straw sippy cups.  They are just about as annoying to clean as bottles.

  • I watch a little boy and he will not drink milk from a sippy, but he's 80th% for weight and 50th% for height and the pedi said that him not drinking his milk would not hurt him (he eats cheese, yogurt, has milk on his cereal) and so he no longer gets bottles and no longer drinks milk.

He's 2 now, but I am pretty sure his mom dropped the bottle around 15-17 months?

  • The most important reason to switch is DC's teeth.  My niece is two and still uses a bottle...she's already developing an overbite.

  • I'm still doing 3 bottles a day. DS won't drink milk from a straw, sippy cup etc.  He also doesn't eat very much. He's only in the 10% ile for weight. My doctor said to throw away the bottles and he doesn't need milk. With is weight being low and not eating much I won't get rid of it.
  • DD really fought milk in a cup-- ANY cup- sippy, straw, regular cup for the loooooooongest time. YET she could care less about getting milk in the bottle either.

we too- tried to go 'cold turkey' over the summer- she didn't care about the lack of bottles, she just wouldn't drink milk. we went three day with no milk- she didn't care.

i added the bottles back at that point (13 months or so)--- and just continued to keep trying with the cups.

then just one day- i swear to the man above- she just decided drinking milk from the cup was ok. She literally got up that morning and i put milk in a cup and put it on her tray (like i always did) and she happily drank it.

    I was like WTF.

what is different? why is she drinking it now ( just for me to understand)--- who knows. they will do it when its time. just keep offering it.

  • I'm so not looking forward to the switch.

Just out of curiosity...why would a bottle be so much worse then a sippy for their teeth? Isn't it the same sucking action/same position?
