i know you are supposed to tip a person who comes and performs a "fix it service" like plumbers, electricians and people who come to fix something not build it.
a sweep is a more maintenance so that is tough....if they are with a large company i would say no. if it is a small business i would sat yes. just b/c they may work at a lower rate and factor in tips like a plumber would.
I don't know if I'm right or not, but I don't plan to tip mine.
But I also don't tip plumbers, electricians, etc.
my dh is a plumber... i am sad. you pay for them to buy stock for your house. you tip them to pay for the extra time.
my dh will bid a job his service is 100 bucks for an estimated 5 hr job, stock is 400. his estimate is 500.
if your pipes are a mess (cause he can;t see behind walls) and he has to work an extra 5 hrs.. he would not get any money for it...unless you tip him.
this should help you hire a good craftsman. they should not double the price "in case" they run into trouble. always ask that.
so if the sweep's estimated time for the job goes significantly over... i would tip. but a sweep form a large company may have already included that in the price.
The plumbers/electricians/painters that I have used all bill on a per hour basis and they bill for the time to get supplies, which I always hated! I would rather tip them a little extra than pay their astronomical hourly rate for them to run to the store.

they were here 40 mins- i didn't tip.
and that is good to know re: plumbers and electricians. i thought those were on the 'not necessary to tip' list.
