Not liking Fishermen's wool for KAL

I really don't like it at all.  I think it's going to be too itchy for DS.  Will washing and lanolizing soften it once I'm done?  I want to make some cream and red stripe longies for Christmas next.

Can someone recommend their favorite brand of wool yarn for my next pair?

  • I haven't tried Fisherman's wool, but most wool will soften significantly with a little lanolin.

The softest yarn I've ever seen is Pure Wool on etsy.  purewool.etsy.com I adore their single ply worsted weight. For longies, though, the 3ply might be better (less prone to felting).

  • I'd wait until washing and lanolizing before giving up on it.

  • Oh, there are some pretty yarns in that shop!

I have two skeins of super soft alpaca yarn that I bought just for the KAL, but was told alpaca isn't the best for longies.  Crying  I'm glad I bought some cheap stuff for my first pair, because the waistband turned all wonky a couple of rows into the work.  Oh well.  I'm glad to know it will likely soften up.  Since I've never used wool before, I'll have to order some wool wash too.

  • I LOVE Northern Essence liquid wool wash.  It works beautifully!

I've never used wool wash.  I just use baby soap & then the bottle of lanolin I have from when DS was born (that crap goes a loooong way!).
  • Fisherman's wool has lanolin in it...But I agree it's scratchy I got a callus from it lol it did soften up once I felted it though

  • Stupid wool newbie question...can I use Medela Lanolin?  I have nearly an entire tube left from when last used it 6 months ago.  Sorry if this is a ridiculous question.

That's what I've been using.  Check to be 100% sure that it doesnt have any other additives in it though.
  • Awesome!  Thank you!

  • You will see a difference from washing.  In the future, you can wash your swatch in the same way that you plan to wash your longies and see how much the yarn softens (it's also usually a good idea to wash a swatch to see how your gauge will change once the yarn relaxes, but I plead guilty to skipping this step more often than I should).
