Pregnant after a Loss

Gained 4 lbs in one month- Dr told me to "watch it"

Ugh, no fun.  I started out a little fluffy, like 10-15 lbs heavier than I should be so I knew that I wouldn't have to gain to much weight.  I'm only up 8 lbs total, but i'm only supposed to gain a total of 20.

This is not fun, and now I'm worried that I'm going to keep gaining a lot, like a down hill slope since I'm in the 2nd tri and a few weeks away from the 3rd.

I'm just whining, someone make me feel better Sad

Re: Gained 4 lbs in one month- Dr told me to "watch it"

  • WTF??? Mean doctor!  I gained 13 in a month and my OB didn't say a word.  And I wasn't a small girl before either.  4 is nothing to freak about, WHY do they insist on making you feel self-conscious?

You gain what you gain.  As long as it's not a freakish amount you should not stress in my opinion!  Besides your gain will go in spurts.  Since that 13 pound month I have levelled off considerably.

I've hear d alot of girls like me slow down a lot in thrid tri and some even lose weight towards the end.  Don't beat yourself up about it!

  • You have much more self restraint than I.  I might have told him to shove it.  I know the Dr. is trying to make sure you and LO are healthy, but if you gain it, it's you who has to lose it, not him... so do your best, but no sense beating yourself up over it.  Stressing out will make you and LO feel worse.  You'll be fine, and I'll bet you and your bump are beautiful!

  • I gained 8 this last month and I was just weighed today!!!  So don't feel bad.  My dr. didn't say a word to me about my gain, so take it with a grain of salt!

  • Damn doctors are never happy - they told me to eat MORE and they're telling you to eat LESS - LOL. I agree with Reba, 4 pounds is not bad for a month - that's a pound a week, which is what everything I've read says is normal for where you're at. And yes, I lost half a pound the last 2 weeks because as you get further along you probably won't be able to eat as much. I'm miserable anytime I eat anything, large or small - so it's actually been hard for me to get the calories in - so try not to worry too much. You're doing great!
  • That seems unnecessary. Most people have their greatest weight gain in second tri, especially after 20 weeks. Try not to worry, you can only control this so much.
  • 4 is nothing! That's a pound a week.  I gained 8lbs in the past month and thankfully my OB didn't mention it.  I always get nervous they're going to mention my weight, but so far so good.
  • Thanks girls.  You can always make me feel better.  I thought I was doing so well, and then the "watch it" made me feel bad.

I guess the dr. was just being a poop today.

  • 4 pounds in one month is perfect.  I think my doctor would hug me he'd be so proud.  I got the "watch it" speach after gaining 12 pounds in 1 month.  Since then things have slowed down thankfully.

  • I also gained four from 20 to 24w. My doctor said everything was fine! And then I gained nothing from 24-28w, which was surprising because I put on way too much in the 1st tri, and I started out overweight. Don't let your  doctor worry you too much! As long as you're eating when you're hungry and not gorging yourself, you're gaining the right amount. Some doctors are so focused on the numbers, they completely ignore other factors like body type and the fact that you won't gain weight steadily. You have no cause for concern, IMO.
  • I just gained 4 pounds in 2 weeks.  You're fine. Don't worry about it yet, and weight gain is never consistent, you could gain very little by your next appointment.  That wasn't very nice of your doctor. Although mine was kind of sarcastic - after my 4 pound gain in 2 weeks she said "so you're not having trouble gaining weight now huh?"
  • Well, at my 24 wk appt. I'd gained 10 lbs in one month, if that helps at all, and I didn't hear a single thing about it. So boooo to your dr. And remember, it comes in spurts sometimes, so you might be just fine in terms of only gaining 20 lbs. You're doing great :)

  • try not too worry about it too much.  I stressed and stressed during 2nd tri.  I gained 7 lbs in 4 weeks around 24 weeks.  It evened out in 3rd tri.  I gained 40 total and am down 26 already.

  • Your little guy is probably having a growth spurt, plus a pound a week is nothing to freak out over. I'm in the same boat as you and I will probably gain about 35 by the time this is over. I didn't want to gain over 20-25.

I know it is hard, but try not to beat yourself up about it. My doc has never said a word about me gaining "too much" but I figure I know people who have put on 100 lbs during a pregnancy and I am not going to be ANYWAY near that.
