Decided to go with Cloth Diapers

Okay, so I have decided to go with Cloth Diapers.  I am going to use prefolds with the Bummis Super Whisper Wrap cover, and using cloth wipes.

Since I have decided to use the Super Whisper Wrap, I know they have the tendency to get wet and can't be wiped down and reused like Thirsties.  How many do you think I will need?  I may get a couple of Thirsties to see what I think as well.

And since I am using the Whisper Wrap Cover, is it better to still fold the prefold and use snappis or pins or does it work just as well to tri-fold the diaper and set it in the wrap?

Lastly (for now), I'm still torn about whether to use Indian or Chinese prefolds.  Someone on here suggested Clotheez from Green Mountain Diapers.  I also found a local source that has premium diaper service quality Chinese prefolds.

Any other suggestions or recommendations?

Oh, and is there a specific place that has better prices than most?

  • The Bummis SWW is still a PUL cover, and can be reused, just like the Thirsties covers.  You can trifold, but I'd recommend getting a snappi or two - the trifolding doesn't keep in nb poo, and you'd be changing a lot of covers (you will anyway in the beginning, but even more if you don't snappi or pin).  I'd recommend 5-6 covers in the nb size.  I'd get a small variety.  We liked our Bummis SWW and the Thirsties.  We also got a prorap for the cord cut out - didn't love it by any means, but it did work ok for the cord.

  • i never used bummis, so I can't help you there, but I highly recommend getting a snappi! if you don't use one, you will need a bazillion cover b/c the poo will get everywhere.

I recommend unbleached over bleached, but not sure about the chinese vs indian. The one good thing about the GMD pfs is that they are "sized". a regular pf will engulf your nb and not fit under the cover. maybe consider getting a few orange or yellow edged gmd pfs, and completing your stash with the local pfs.

  • Congrats on deciding to use cloth for diapering your baby! I hope you love it as much as I have!

As far as a newborn stash, how often do you plan on doing that wash? If you plan on doing it every three days, I'd get about 3-dozen. I'd suggest buying 1 dozen of the orange edge and 2 dozen of the yellow. Even my premie grew out of the orange pretty quick but they are great to have the first couple days home. Also, I actually prefer the bleaches ones to the unbleached....not sure on the Indian v. Chinese though....I just buy through Green Mountain Diaper. They rarely have sales or seconds, but you can often times find them used either on spots corner (www.hyenacart.com) or diaperswappers.com for about $25/dozen uncluding shipping. They re sell very easily too.

As for covers, your LO will outgrow covers really quick, so be prepared. I'd probably suggest getting 5 covers, 2 per day, rotate between them, and then a 5th cover for wash day. I would suggest looking at some Imse Vimse covers too. I did not like Proraps, Bummis Super Brites were okay, but Blueberrys (which they don't carry anymore), Imse Vimse, Thirsties XS, and Bummis Super Whisper Wraps were my favorite. I also had a Little Bettle Wool Wrap for long naps/night time.

I also may suggest looking into just a few AIOs for night time. I'm pretty good about getting up but at night when I was dead tired, didn't want to wake the baby by turning any lights on and still learning to even use a snappi on a prefold, I LOVED my AIOs! I highly suggest XS BumGenuis and Xsmall Sposoeasy. LOVED them!

Oh, and I second the Snappi. It's a must!

Thank you for all the advice!  One thing about the newborn size is that I can eventually use them as a doubler, right?  I plan on getting a few of those too.  I also decided bleached diapers is the way I would like to go.  I do think I will wash diapers every 3 days.  It seems like the most reasonable amount of time.  I looked up the ImseVimse and I am intrigued.  So are the supposed to be a bit more breathable than the others?
