Babies: 9 - 12 Months

How long do you wait after bottle for solids?

Sorry I have so many solids question; DS's pedi was basically like "Go for it!" at his six-month appt. and sent us on our merry way.

I know I read somewhere to wait 30 minutes, but how important is that?  I'm finding it difficult to find time to feed him solids because of his nap schedule; if wait 15 minutes or so instead, it's easier to fit in before he starts getting sleepy.

Re: How long do you wait after bottle for solids?

  • This may be bad, but I feed her solids whenever we have some free time. With my work schedule (part-time), her big nap in the AM, getting ready for work/daycare, her nap when I get home from work, there's just not a whole lot of time for solids. I feel bad, like I'm cheating her out of "practice time" on solids, but nursing is so much easier! I guess to answer your question though, it's like 1/2 hr.- 1 hour after nursing for us.

  • usually 60-90 minutes. Depends on the meal, day, and naps.

  • We normally wait an hour before giving her solids, or else she just doesn't seem interested. Could you give the bottle earlier, so that you LO is hungry at the appropriate meal times?

  • I breastfeed so it is not exactly a bottle, but i nurse and then he eats his meal immediately after. We have never had any issues.
  • I would say do whatever works.  DD is very hungry when she gets home from daycare, so I usually nurse her, give solids about half an hour later, and give her a full bottle about 45 minutes after that.  It's just for practice right now, so I don't think it matters much.

  • DD gets her solids when she wakes up and before she goes to bed and right after eating her solids she gets a bottle.  I give her a smaller bottle when she eats her solids though bc she never finishes the amount I give her during the day.
  • Wow. I never really thought to wait. In the morning, DS gets his cereal and 1/2 jar of fruit then we wash him up, change him into his clothes, and give him a 4 oz bottle. We're already up at 6 -- I can't imagine waking up any earlier and it seems to work. In the evening, he eats around 6 --  1 jar of fruit and his cereal and about 90 minutes later gets a 6 oz bottle. (He doesn't always drink it all)
  • I read to do it BEFORE the bottle. Maybe I'm wrong. I haven't been to the pedi yet...

We've been doing about 3-4 tsp's of soids just before it's time for her usual bottle. Then, I do the bottle after. She seems to enjoy the food, and doesn't fuss anymore than she normally would when she is hungry.

  • We used to do solids right before bottle, but when DS got a cold I switched b/c I wanted to make sure he was getting formula since he was eating less.  Now we do a bottle and then solids immediately after.

  • I am sure every Pedi has their own opinion like everything else, but mine said to do solids and then a bottle a little after. She said do  you drink something before or after you eat, I said after, and she said there you go!
