Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

How do you work on the saying "please" thing?

DD:  More noodle!  More! More!  ::: gestures imperiously towards serving dish ::: More!  More noodle!

DH:  Can you say please, Mags?

DD:  ::: nods ::: Okay.

DH:  More noodles, *please,* Maggie.  More noodles *please.*

DD:  ::: gets "very good, daddy, you understand I want more noodles.  Are you slow or something?" look and nods ::: Okay!  Yes, Daddy!  More noodle!

Lather, rinse, repeat.

So do we just have to be persistent and try to outlast her in the "no sh!t, parents.  I want more" cycle or is there a super-secret-magic technique I'm missing here?

Re: How do you work on the saying "please" thing?

  • (Before I answer this question, GOOD GOD she's beautiful.)

We just keep at it. We do the "what do you say?" a lot. Now its "popsicle peeeeeeeeese" or "peees peeeeeeease!"

Of course it also backfires because she'll stand in front of the freezer screaming "PLEASE PLEASE!"

    And that's a bit sad.

  • Abby uses the sign please. We taught it to her by signing it before giving her anything. She will sign it now. It came with lots of practice. She will sign please now if I say, "Use your manners". It is cute!

  • Repetition. "Pees" just sort of happened one day. "Thank you" is in DD's heavy fave phrase rotation.

  • we are working on the same thing.  "can you say please?"  "waahhhhhh you're not pouring my damn milk fast enough!"  "please, Lu?"  "waaaaaaahhh!"

occassionally i will here a "peeees"  and then i just smother her in praise.  but it only happens 1 out of every 5 tries.

here's my other lame attempt.  i insert the word please into her books when i'm reading.  the cat and the hat wants to please come in. mr brown can moo.  can you moo too, please?  lol. it's so not effective.

  • Just continue to model it and she will adopt it about the time it becomes developmentally appropriate.  99% positive.

We try doing that too. We tell him, "Say please more," and sign 'please more' to him when he wants to eat, but he just keeps signing 'more'. Sometimes I will take his hand and show him how to sign please. I know he is getting frustrated when he starts signing 'more eat eat eat eat' to me, lol. "Mom, I just want to eat! To hell with this 'please' business!" I am looking forward to the day when he will say or sign please to me and not look at me like I am an idiot for delaying his food.

  • You're doing everything right!  Every single time your LO asks for something, say "_____ please?"  "say _____ please!"  Every time.  Your LO will catch on I promise.

  • LOL... so I once was borderline flamed for asking the same question: "What are you? A speech therapist? Don't you know how hard it is for kids this age to say simple words?"  Yes, mom-of-11-month-old, I realize your child is not saying please/thank you yet... but we over here are moving into 2s.

Anyway, back to your question.  Caleb says thank you sometimes and please when we prompt him.  It has taken some time, a lot of patience and asking him to repeat it.  I say just be persistent.  She will eventually pick it up.  Now, if she's 9yo and not saying please/thank you, I'd say you have a battle on your hands.  Wink

Often, when I asked Caleb to say 'thank you' he responds with "Nice!"  That cracks me up.

LOL!  DD definitely *can* say "please" (or at least "pees" - or "peas" or "pillow" or "put" or "pet" or "'pillar" or "plum" or "peach" or "poop").  She just doesn't seem to see the point if that makes sense.

You ladies have some great suggestions and points, though.  We'll keep at ait!

LOL!  One of my friends was telling me she bribes her 3 year old with M&Ms to encourage him to talk more.
