Party's over for DH - this Working Mama's hitting the couch

So tonight is the night. DH is going to have do the dishes after dinner each night versus his current dishwashing motto of only washing on holidays or when he's trying to impress the inlaws.  For years, I've accepted the "I hate to do dishes and if I'm made to do them, we'll just order take out every night" excuse or this is the best one "You make too big of a mess while cooking."  Enough is enough! I do the grocery shopping, cooking, dish cleaning every single weeknight and after 7 years, I'm done! I even prep the coffee maker for the morning and make him and DS breakfast before I leave.

So question - do I ease him into it like 2x per week or just tell him he's dish guy going forward? The good news is that DH hates a messy house so I highly doubt he'll blow it off and leave dishes in the sink in hopes that I'll eventually give-in.

  • We've always had a rule--if one person does the cooking, the other does the dishes.  It has always seemed fair enough, and there haven't been any complaints.  Don't know what to tell you though.  My DH wouldn't have gotten away with that excuse!

  • I would just tell him the new rule and then stick to it.  I think it is too easy to backslide into old habits if something is only done once or twice a week.  DH cleans our dishes every night.  He didn't like it at first and there was a lot of complaining but now he does it without making a big deal every night after dinner.  Someone on this board made the comment that the rule in their house was that no one gets to sit down and relax until everyone gets to relax.  I really like that rule.
  • I'd dive right in with making him do them tonight and make him the new dish guy.  And tell him to prep the coffee for the morning while he's in there.  If I tell my DH that he has to do something 1 or 2 times a week it turns into never.

nice.  I was just thinking that if this was my DH, I would be in for what I like to call "the waiting game," where we try to wait each other out.  He invariably wins.  Sometimes, I'm not sure if he even knows we're playing.

Anyway, I would dive in.  Maybe you can come back to this again in 7 years.

  • We also have the rule of : one person cooks, one person does the dishes,  It works out for us!

    This is our way, too.

I agree with the pps who said it can't just be a once or twice a week thing; you need to have a steady plan to make it a habit.  Otherwise, you'll just end up "nagging" him to do it every time.

    Good luck!
