3rd Trimester

Ladies who've had WLS....re GD testing

Okay I know that we have talked about this before and I was not going to have to do the glucose testing but now my doctor is concerned that the fasting bloodwork is not going to be accurate.  So I wanted to check in with you guys to see how bad the glucose testing was.  Let me know if the dumping was horrible.  DH does not want me to do it as he is afraid that the dumping will be unbearable.  I am torn becuase I want to do the best thing for my baby.  Please HELP!!

  • I was diagnosed w/ GD and would love to help, but I'm not sure what you mean when you say "dumping"..

  • the dumping? do you mean pooping?
  • Dumping is something that you get when you have had Weight loss surgery and eat too much sugar (and sometimes other things).  For me, it is cold sweats, stomach pains and sometimes frequent trips to the bathroom.  Tongue Tied None of this is fun and can be extremely painful but not something that will kill me.

  • I have GD, and I didn't think the test was nearly as bad as people said.  yes it sux getting stuck with a needle four times, and afterwards i felt a bit crappy b/c i hadn't eaten anything but it was totally fine.  If you mean pooping, no problems there.

  • Gotcha.  While i do have GD, but havent had that surgery, i really can't speak to that.  However, since the 1 hour is a 50 mg of glucose, i can see where that could be an unpleasant side effect. Maybe if you don't want to take the test, if you think it would be too painful, you could just do the GD diet for the rest of your pregnancy - limit carbs and sweets, eat smaller more frequent meals, etc.  Hope everything works out for you.
  • I did te test at 16 weeks casue I was on meds when I got pregnant.. Failed the 1-hour and had to do 3 hour and passed.. I have to do it again thursday.... It wasnt bad at all.. Just do it.. Everyone should be tested.

  • I would do the glucose testing.   Granted, I can't speak for any side effects due to WLS but I feel that what is best for the baby is what should be done.

I failed the one hour which surprised my doctor based on my size.    Even after failing it, she said she didn't think I would fail the 3 hour.    Sure enough, I did fail it.    Untreated GD can have very severe impacts on the baby and the mother...

  • I had weight loss surgery and became pregnant about 9 months after. My dr insisted on making me drink the yucky stuff and I was very nervous about it. I actually tolerated it well and didn't have a problem at all. I passed with flying colors.
