3rd Trimester

Why do you go to L&D when your water breaks?

Is it because of a high risk pregnancy?   Don't you just call and then wait at home for contractions?  Or to deliver via c/s?

My memory is foggy on this but  I stayed at home for the 3 min apart contractions....

  • I was told you go right to the hospital if your water breaks.
  • You only need to go if you are B strep +.  I was negative.  I labored at home for 16 hours before going anywhere.  They specifically tell you NOT to come running in when your water breaks at my hospital.

As far as I know, what PP said above and as LO loses that fluid it's bad for them.

I was told if Labor starts with contractions, then yes you stay home and time then. But if Labor starts with water breaking (or as soon as my water breaks) then I have to get my butt to the hospital!!!

  • Once your water breaks there is a higher risk of infection because there is nothing protecting your baby anymore. Most OB's like to deliver you within 24 hrs or the risk of infection goes up even more. You probably do have time to take a shower or something quick like that (NOT a bath). It's not an emergency but it does call for a phone call to your doctors office. Mine told me to come to the L & D if that happens but I'm already 3 cm dilated. Your water could break and you could still be only a fingertip. Thats why you call. All hospitals are different.

I guess it just depends on your hospital's procedure.  But, when we took a class at the hospital they said if your water breaks call your Dr. and then head over to the hospital.

  • If you are trying for an intervention free birth then you should hang out at home.  Labor after the water breaks can still take hours.  Don't try to get to the hospital until contractions are strong enough that you feel very serious through them (the emotional test :)  If you can smile for the pictures or chit chat with family a bunch it just might be a bit too early.  Once your in real active labor you can head on in.

  • I think it kind of depends on the doctor if you have to go right away. Some say you can labor for up to 12 hours if you are planning a vaginal birth and some say come in right away. I know that if you are having a csection and your water breaks you are supposed to go in right away.I think in some states you have to have your baby within 24 hours or they give you a section because of the risk of infection.
  • I so need to review the procedures.  I didn't even ask about what if my water breaks...LOL

I don't anticpate is breaking before the scheduled c/s, but if it did I would sit around thinking hmmm, what to do? what to do?

    LOL

  • Our MW puts no time limit on labor when your water breaks. I am free to labor at home until I am ready to come to the birthing center.

  • With DD1, My water broke and they had me go right in even though I was GBS neg. There is still a chance of infection, and you have to give birth within 24 hours of your water breaking.

I did this with baby #2.  Water broke whilst mopping the kitchen floor at 41 w 6 days.   Stayed home, continued to mop.  Baby born med free at 42 weeks exactly.

I just cannot remember if you are supposed to go to L&D if you aren't overdue or supposed to have a c/s...adding to the MW list of ?s

Nope, you don't. Many OBs would prefer that you do, but you do not HAVE to unless you are showing signs of infection. The body continues to make amniotic fluid...

This makes me laugh.  I have an image of you mopping the floor with your amniotic fluid. Ick!

  • It all depends on the doc and the hospital.  My doc with DD wanted me to come in as soon as my water broke or when my contractions got to the 4 minute apart mark.  Some docs just have you wait on contractions.

If you have a scheduled c-section, you probably do need to head to the hospital if your water breaks.  Not in an OMG PANIC kind of way, but presumably you are scheduling the c-section so that you do not go into labor (e.g. in my case b/c my baby is breech and I don't want her to start coming out), so you should gather your things and head on in and they will likely give you a C right then.

  • besides risk of infection.... when a baby has little to no fluid left the risk of the cord tighteningh around their neck goes up alot, and also, they can sit on it more which keeps oxygen out. so its better to go right to the hospital and have the baby monitored!
