prefolds- what am I doing wrong?

I have infant prefolds that everybody I've talked to has used for MONTHS. But I feel like they aren't wide enough for my DD- and she doesn't really have a huge belly, so I don't know what I'm doing wrong! I was using the angel wing fold, but didn't have enough fabric left to snappi so I switched to the bikini twist- and I can BARELY get any overlap with that one.

They are the same size as either the blue or black GMDs.. just standard infant PFs. Am I folding them wrong? Do I need to give up the snappi? I just am looking at these things thinking HOW on earth are they going to fit for much longer?

Re: prefolds- what am I doing wrong?

  • I'm not familiar with the blue or black GMDs, but I will say that I found the GMD yellows to be just a smidge wider than the infant PFs I had from Jillians.  I have liked the fit of the GMD a lot better.

  • Are you fanning out the front to meet the sides?  I wasnt doing that at first and thought the same thing!  "These are never going to work!"
  • It would help to PIP what you are doing, however, I don't really understand how you "dont' have enough fabric left to snappi" using the angel wing fold as that is adjustable (i.e. cross the ends over or pull them out more depending on width needed).  Have you looked at the EFF blog? I think there are prefold how to pics on there, perhaps that will help.
  • one short end of the fabric (the part that goes around her tummy) doesn't go 1/2 way around her, so there is a bit of a gap where fabric isn't touching. Does that make sense? Let me see if I can get her to cooperate for pictures.
  • Can you fan out the edges a bit more in the front to meet the back part?  I'd say that the medium prefolds for us don't quite go around 1/2 way so we have to fan out the front a little more, which yes, is harder, but is still doable.

Bikini twist- see how there is not much overlap? And that's with no folding to reduce the width- it's only twisted. And the rise seems low?

it looks a bit better in this fold, but still not much overlap at all...

I'm not folding it down at all, it would be WAY too short if I did it that way.

  • We don't use the bikini twist, just angel wing fold, so I'll comment on that one - it looks like you are getting the dipe caught on her legs so that its not high enough (that's why the rise seems low).  Otherwise, it looks like the overlap is fine, we don't have more than just enough overlap to keep the plastic of the snappi from touching skin and you have a fair bit of fold in the front (you can always fan out more as LO grows).  I have noticed that after putting the dipe on, I often have to lift her legs up to push the dipe up her legs to make sure I can pull the dipe up high enough.  Does that make sense?
  • I have been using standard blue edge pfs with my diaper service, and I too find them too narrow to get a good overlap.  I just got in the mail my orange and yellow edge GMDs (newborn and infant, respectively), and they are both wider than the blue edge ones.  I have not used them yet but think that I will get a better fit (I like a lot of overlap).  Have you gone to GMD's site and compared the measurements to the ones you are using?
