a few nanny questions

Hi!
I have a few quick questions for those that employ a nanny or have worked as one. We just chose our nanny (feels so good!) and we're just finalizing all of the details.

1. (employer) Do you pay for an allotted amount of sick leave / (nanny) have you ever been given sick leave?
2. (employer) Are you planning to offer some sort of paid vacation days? / (nanny) have you ever been given paid vacation days?

We are leaning towards offering 5 paid sick days (as an incentive NOT to work when sick, so our little babe doesn't catch anything), but no paid vacation days. I think that is acceptable (?). I can work at home pretty easily when necessary, so the paid sick days really are not a burden for us.

Thanks!

Re: a few nanny questions

  • For a bit more context, this is a FT nanny working Monday - Thursday, 8 -10 hours per day.

    Thanks!

I think the paid sick days are a good idea but FWI she might use some of those sick days as vacation days if you don't give her any vacation days because who would want to be sick on their day off? If it were me I would put in a sick policy, kind of like the ones day cares have only this one is for her. I would also make her bring a Dr office note for any more than 2 days in a row missed. I hope your nanny works out!

  • When we had a nanny, it was only for a few days a week and for 6 hours a day. We had a fairly loose arrangement and it worked out for us, but I certainly see the wisdom in addressing these questions early on. We didn't do paid sick days or paid vacation. We did give a bonus for Hannukah (she was Jewish). I think there were a few occassions where we paid her when LO was sick and we stayed home with him (if it was a last minute thing). As I said, our arrangment was pretty loose and not full time.

    Hope that helps some :)

Life is a roller coaster, enjoy it!

  • We have a nanny share, 3 days a week, 8 hours a day.  We aren't paying any paid sick time or vacation time.  Our situation is a little different because the nanny is the mother of a very close friend.  We offered to do some kind of paid leave, but she refused (we'll do something good for her at the holidays, I am sure).  My understanding is that it is standard for a full time (40 hours a week) situation to give 40 hours of paid sick leave and 80 hours of paid vacation.  The paid time off accrues with each pay period (ie, she wouldn't be able to take a week long paid vacation after only a month of employment).  Ultimately, I think it just has to come down to what you are comfortable offering and she is willing to take. Congrats on finding a nanny--it is such a relief to have it taken care of!

That's a lot to ask for someone who you're not providing insurance to.  Even as a teacher, we don't have to have a doctor's note until we've been gone for 5 days
  • I was a part time nanny (4 hours a day).

If here children were sick or there was a Dr appointment or somthing the mom needed to take them to, and she didnt give me closer to 24 hour notice than she would still pay me for that day, but when I was sick I was not paid. I guess either way would work though.

I did not get vacation days, but I would get 1-2 weeks off for christmas and $ (which = a weeks pay.)

  • My SIL is basically working as our nanny, she has her son at home as well. It's 3 days a week, so I gave her one week (3 days) PTO time - sick or vacation, whatever. We'll probably increase it next year.

We also give her paid holidays (the major ones we get, which is pretty standard) and we pay her if we don't bring Sabrina for some reason (sick, etc). We do reserve the right to use up to one week vacation time for ourselves, but we haven't used it and won't this year. We may next year when we go on vacation, and we'll give her several months notice.

  • I'm in a full time nanny share.

It's standard here in SF for the nanny to get 5 personal/sick days and 2 weeks paid vacation. No doctor's note needed for days off.

  • Hmm, I'm not sure our situation counts, but here is what we do:

    1. We paid 5 sick days

    2. We offered 2 weeks vacay, but she'll be taking it concurrent with me.  So, it's not exactly like normal PTO.

That brings up a good point. If we take vacay and the nanny doesn't, we still have to pay her the normal rates.
