I am trying to make sense of when and how to handle my maternity leave using disabiliy and family leave and my two weeks vacation for maximum payment and time home with the baby. Any California Mammas got any tips? i think I can receive diability for 6 weeks from baby birth (I want to spend most time afterwards with baby) then use 6 weeks of family leave. Any tips for this process would be appreciated.
Re: Tips on California Disability and Family Leave $
did you doctor give you the paper work to fill out? you can get up to 4 weeks prior to your due date and 6 weeks for after for a vaginal birth, 8 weeks for c-section. the four weeks before do not affect your 6 weeks after, but if you are also trying to use vacation, i'm not sure how that works- i would ask your employer. i think you'd use that vacation time at the very end, after your disability and family leave act time is up.
anyways, so after your disability leave, the state should send you a form to fill out for paid family leave which is another 6 weeks at 55% (ish) of your salary.
here is a link to all the info you should need, but i would also clear up any questions with your doctor and your employer before sending in the form. on the left menu, you'll see a link to the paid family leave act info as well. good luck!

"So does DH also qualify for family leave starting 4 weeks before due date?"
Maybe. It would be to take care of you on your disability, but then he only get's 2 weeks paid once the baby arrives. You can only take 6 paid weeks of CA Family leave a year. He then can use the extra 6 weeks of the unpaid federal family leave which runs concurrently with the state.
My DH is going to take his 6 weeks at random times during the next year. 2 weeks to start once LO arrives and then sprinkle in the other 4 later.
I think you have all the basic info that you need from other posters. There is a 1 week unpaid grace period for disability, so you may want to use 1 week of vacation so you get paid.
Also, disability and family leave both only pay at like 55 or 60% of your salary, so I plan on using my sick and vacation time to cover the other 45 or 40%, so I will be bringing home the same amount of $.
I found this document to be helpful....helps explain California's maternity leave laws visually:

To summaraize: You can go on California State Disability Insurance (CA SDI) 4 weeks prior to your due date (this doesn't affect the time you get after the birth). After you have the baby, you get 6 weeks for a vaginal birth and 8 weeks for c-section. The first week is unpaid (not sure why).
After the 6 or 8 weeks of CA SDI, you will receive paperwork in the mail to apply for Paid Family Leave (PFL) which entitles you to 6 more weeks.
So in total you can take 16 weeks for a vaginal birth (4 weeks before and 12 after) or 18 weeks for a c-section (4 weeks before and 14 after).
Hope this helps!
