HUGE AW: Psip and our birth story!

Crusoe Finn, 10/14/09, 8lbs, 3oz

We got to the hospital at 7am for induction. They broke my water at 730am. At that point, I was 6cm. I got in the shower for an hour to ease contraction pain. When I got out, my contractions were every two minutes and I was 7cm. I asked for the epi so they started the saline drip. As the drip went in, the contractions became terrible and very close together. The midwife checked me and I was 9cm. It was too late for the epi! I got on all fours to ease the back pain of contractions for 15 minutes and then at 10am I switched to lay on my back to push. After 5 minutes of pushing, he was born at 10:07am.

Let me say, having had an epidural with DS1 I never fully got the immense pain involved in a med-free birth. I now have the utmost respect for every woman who hasn't used any pain meds for L&D. Having him without an epi felt like I was being torn apart. SO. MUCH. PAIN.

What helped me the most in dealing with the pain, was to embrace it. As odd as that sounds. When I tried to fight the contractions, they hurt worse so in the shower I just relaxed and let the pain come. Getting on all fours really helped the pain too even though my butt was hanging out!

We just got home this evening. Glad to be home! Tired, but very happy.
