Babies: 3 - 6 Months

4 month wakeful? WTH?

I saw the post below, but it was just about a link to an article so I hope this isn't (too) repetitive.

I think this is what's happening to DD right now.  Suddenly when she wakes up during the night, she's wide awake and ready to go.  She was such a good sleeper (we Ferberized her), but not anymore.  She's hit a growth spurt on top of it, so she's waking multiple times at night when she only used to wake up once.  These two are a bad combination--up a lot, and not wanting to go back to sleep afterward.  And now for the kicker--I think she's starting to teethe.

Is this 4 month wakeful period for real, and when does it end?  Another night like the last two and I'll be a zombie.

  • DS is going through this. it is IMPOSSIBLE to get him to sleep now, and before it was SOOO easy. it's like he's just way too interested in his surroundings to sleep like he did before. he gets up twice the number of times now than before as well. really hoping that this doesn't last for long.
  • My baby JUST started sleeping for a 5-7 hour period through the night. I found that swaddling her really does make a difference. If she gets out of her swaddle she wakes up earlier and cranky to boot! she is still rather inconsistent though. any tips on what i should be doing during the day to help her sleep more consistently through the night. i have started reading that Baby Wise book but i guess i'm just not grasping it.

  • No insight but wanted to say I feel your pain.  I'm pretty sure that is what has been going on the last few nights.  My first never slept anyways so I don't remember the 4 month wakeful period.

  • We went through this about the same time and it ended a few days ago.  We did nothing different.  Only go in the room for crying/to replace paci...do not talk or pick-up LO (or feed unless you know they're hungry, DS STTN beforehand so I knew he wasn't).  Ours lasted about 2 weeks.  He just snapped out of it.

  • Just this week DS has started getting harder to put down for the night.  So I've started giving him his nighttime bottle in the nursery with VERY little lighting.  That way he starts to wind down while feeding.  After he's finished I burp and rock him for at least 15 minutes until he's calm....then lay him in his crib and cover him up.  Usually he still fusses at this point, so I pick up right after getting his blankets situated and rock him another 5 minutes or so...lay back down again with paci.  It's been working so far.  But it used to take me 10 minutes to put him down, where now it takes AT LEAST 30 minutes! Hopefully it will pass soon!
