I told my BMs, 'Get together and agree on a color. The dresses don't need to match, just coordinate somewhat.' They chose black cocktail dresses from their very own closets.
Who can top that? Yup, here they are, unmatching and looking wonderful:
My Maid of honor(didn't have any other bridesmaids) also picked her own dress. I just told her the color and let her pick whatever dress she was comfy in since she was pregnant at the time.

Yeah, been there, done that, and even got to pick the color because we were a "tropical rainbow" LMAO. We didn't even need shoes, because we were barefoot. That was my sister's second wedding, though, so technically, it may not count...
Not trying to snark, but I thought that was a pretty common thing...
That's cool if you've seen it. I've never seen a bride allowing the ladies to pick both color and style. Neither here, nor IRL. But maybe I live under a rock.

I didn't see the dresses until my wedding day.
Wellll...you DO live in Raleigh...
zactly. AND the wedding was outside Chapel Hill (aka the boonies).
My aunt made all my BM's dresses. It cost the girls $35 each for the pattern and material. They emailed their measurements to me and we had them done in a weekend.
My BF did that. She had 12 BMs, so it was quite the variety, but it looked cool. I got married 6 months later and would have been a copy cat if I did the same thing ; ) That's totally the reason why I picked out the strapless Jessica McClintock dresses in ruby and chocolate for my girls. Totally.
I only had a MOH - and I told her spring time / pastel colors - and to go for it...did the same thing with the reception hall decorators...me and DH did the party favors...I did mine and the MOH flowers and I did the mens boutineres (sp?)...
I pretty much cut everyone out...and did what I wanted to do...and called it a day...meh
I tried.... really really really tried to get my BMs to choose their own dresses. They were not having it. They made me pick from a stack of 5 or 6 dresses.
Spending the day with my bridesmaids was one of the things that was strangely very important to me about my wedding day, so I did get a little bride-zilla-ish about it. But all in all, I think I was a pretty good bride. No shoes needed, my MOH made the jewelry, they picked out the dress (I picked the color, but I bought the dresses for all of them, and I paid for the hair and make-up for all of them.
Basically because there's no way DH would let his sisters pay for any of that, and there was no way I was going to let my 2 oot friends pay for all of that on top of their traveling expenses, and it didn't seem fair to leave the other 2 bms out. I knew that if I asked them to pay for their own hair and make-up, they would probably opt out, and I really wanted us all to get glammed up and feel pretty. And they loved it, I loved it, and they were gorgeous.
This is a trend now. Maybe if you did this in 1980 it would be a big deal, but not these days. I've been in 2 weddings like this and we chose black for both.
I gave my BMs 3 dress choices and they all decided on a strapless, tea-length dress. I chose the color of the dress & the sash that went around their waist.
My dress was white with apple-red trim. I told them pick whatever they wanted in apple. My girls were a 0, a 20 and a 28. There wasn't a damn thing that was going to look right on all three of them.
And the 0 was the pickiest. She must have tried on every damn dress in the building, and hers was the only one that had to be ordered. And taken in. Biitch.

They do look great.

Yeah I've seen this done a few times.
I honestly did the same thing. Told my BM to pick whatever they liked best. See bio for results.
This is what I did, actually my sister chose the color and the other 3 went along with it.

They kind of do look similar though.
I picked out like 8 different empire waist dresses (2 BMs were trying to get PG) and told them to choose the one that they all the best.

My silly Lily is almost 4.
we didn't have a bridal party. How's THAT for making it easy one people!

Did the exact same thing. They all wore pink dresses of their own choosing.
I had no desire to dress anyone.
